Open Discussion – Week of June 9, 2014
Caterpillars, moths, butterflies, and all creatures great and small,
There is so much happening that I can’t seem to keep up. Yard work has gotten my attention lately, and there is still work to do.
The release of America’s final POW in the middle-east conflict has lots of discussion. In my opinion, he’s still an American. He was still captured and held against his will. He wanted to come home. We don’t leave people behind.
Some hearings and trials are coming up soon. If anyone gets dates before I do, please post them in comments.
Having an open thread for a week doesn’t mean nothing else will be posted this week. It just means that nothing will be off-topic this week and can be posted here.

I was recently at a retirement party, this discussion came up and I made the mistake of saying I wouldn’t condemn Berghdahl yet. I felt that they needed to do a proper investigation–like talking to him first–so that a decision could be made as to his actions and whether or not he deserted or not. If he deserted or left the post without permission then charge him under the military rules and be done with it. Big mistake……one of the guests then went on a 40 min rant about patriotism, Benghazi, Obama, and vets–he was upset that Nam vets still aren’t given the same respect as the current vets. All was done in “tribute” to the retired person.

Where is the mention of innocent until proven guilty?
He may be right about Vets today and earlier.

“Two years after pushing for a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, the North Carolina Republican Party is stepping back a bit from its opposition to LGBT equality. Qnotes reports that its 2014 platform, adopted this weekend, makes some noticeable changes.
Perhaps most notable is that the platform no longer calls for a federal constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage nationwide, reflecting a trend of many Republican candidates who are no longer pressing for such a measure. The North Carolina platform still endorses support for the state’s marriage amendment, encouraging “all efforts to defend it.”
Also gone from the platform is opposition to “adoption by same sex couples,” which was replaced with support for single parents, who should be “treated with respect and dignity.” The newest platform additionally abandons problematic language that left room for discrimination based on sexual orientation, instead calling on government to “treat all citizens impartially and equally under the law” and opposing discrimination “in any form.”

NBC Pushing For Dismissal Of George Zimmerman Lawsuit
The judge in George Zimmerman’s defamation lawsuit against NBC Universal is set to hear arguments on a request by the media company to dismiss the case.
A hearing has been set for June 19. The case had been postponed pending the conclusion of the Trayvon Martin shooting case. Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder last July in the shooting death of the 17-year-old in Florida.
The former neighborhood watch volunteer sued NBC in 2012, claiming he was defamed when the network edited his 911 call to police after Martin’s shooting to make it sound like he was racist.
NBC Universal said in a court filing that Zimmerman failed to comply with Florida’s statute regarding retraction requests after the March 2012 broadcasts at issue. It also argued that the harms Zimmerman says he suffered weren’t caused by the broadcasts.

Roderick, thanks so much for the update.
That’s it in a nutshell. I would add that no harm actually came to Zimmerman. He went into hiding before Trayvon was identified.

Harm? George benefitted personally from murdering Trayvon. Remember he paid off all of his debts with the blood money from the racists and then bought internet service for a year and matching cell phones for himself and Shellie.
IIRC he told Shellie on one of the jailhouse phone calls that he wasn’t worried about the murder charge, but he was more interested in hiding the blood money so he could get a lower bail and not pay taxes.
If this goes to trial those jailhouse phone calls are a treasure trove for NBC to prove that George didn’t suffer any harm due to his supposed infamy.
