A Gigantic Step Backwards: Trump Bans Transsexuals from the Military on the Anniversary of Truman’s Desegregation of the Armed Forces

The Inglorius Padre Steve's World

Friends of Padre Steve’s World,

Russian dissident Gary Kasparov said this on Twitter yesterday shortly after President Trump announced on the same platform that Transsexuals, even those currently serving honorably would not be allowed to serve in the military. Kasparov noted:

“The autocrat always requires enemies to protect his base from. If real enemies don’t exist, they will be created. Minorities preferred.”

Yesterday I was debating whether to write about President Harry Truman’s courageous decision sixty-nine years ago yesterday to desegregate the U.S. Military. I didn’t because first I have written about it before and I couldn’t come to a decision on how I wanted to approach it. So I wrote an article combining baseball that the principle of interiorizing public rules, norms, traditions, and behaviors that are necessary for our Republic to survive.

But this morning when I saw the series of three Trump tweets about excluding transsexuals from…

A certain Republican disagrees with Trump:

Excerpt from article linked in above tweet:

“There is no reason to force service members who are able to fight, train, and deploy to leave the military — regardless of their gender identity,” McCain said in the statement. “We should all be guided by the principle that any American who wants to serve our country and is able to meet the standards should have the opportunity to do so — and should be treated as the patriots they are.”

    • That’s the problem; they wouldn’t be ready, taking all those drugs, hormone therapies, and seeking or undergoing sexual reassignment surgery! Just like you would hardly be ready having just undergone brain surgery, or was that a face lift? You look a lot younger all of a sudden. The star of the TLC program I Am Jazz is showing us how erratic some of them are, and how costly their lives are. Most of us are unhappy about our lives, but we don’t seek over priced therapies and surgeries that we would not be able to pay out of pocket for. Let those who want any kind of treatment for being transgender foot the cost for themselves and see how fast they run from the military!
      Blessings.

      • What? Many of our service members have served for decades. This has NEVER been an issue before chump made it one. The military hasn’t paid for all of their procedures.

Are you ok with the military paying for ED medication to the tune of 10X’s the amount paid for gender reassignment surgeries?

      • The Conservative party has spewed hate and fear and division for over 8 years now against anyone who isn’t a White Christian. We’ve been fed this fear against immigrants, refugees, people of other religions, people of color, people from other countries, people who speak another language. People who are LBGT.

This is nothing new, another hypocrisy for those who accused President Obama of ‘dividing us’. President Obama’s policies invited inclusion for ALL Americans.

White, conservative Christians who believe in a cruel god to match their own characteristics. They are ISIS under the flag of another religion.

          • And on top of the GOP doing this while blaming President Obama for dividing us, almost everything the fRight Wing has accused President Obama of doing is coming to fruition under chump. The irony would be precious if it weren’t. so. dangerous. AND allowed!!

      • Toni,
Ever heard of boot-camp? If recruits were not ready in mind and body, they would not pass boot-camp requirements to go into active duty. Your after-the-fact judgment and your judgment of LGBT is bigoted. I am not LGBT and cannot speak for them, but my guess is that some of the therapy is help them live their lives without have to hear people like you denigrate them.

For the men and women who serve my country, there is no amount of money or benefits that is enough for what they do.

  2. I am so worried. I know this is just dt trying to distract everyone from Russia, but I am SO worried about the outcome and effect it will have. From my Facebook:

Will be shot down in court easily under a discrimination under strict scrutiny test.

Rachael – I think so too, but we do have a “president” who has NO regard for the rule of law or our judicial system. My concern is though, if it does get struck down, that it will make it WORSE for people who are GBLTQ because that will make it like open season on bullying, knowing even the president didn’t want it. There are those who will think that they are doing a favor by hurting people – I mean, they do now, but they may especially if it goes to court and they lose. IDK if you saw the video I posted earlier about a kid who was bullied until he killed himself, but I think by having someone in charge who doesn’t have even 1 cell of humanity in his body, it gives a green light to so many others who are missing the humanity gene and things will just get worse. I want to start a campaign where people just do one act of compassion for someone or like “adopt” a person who needs some compassion, take them under their wing, if everyone did that for just one person…we have to counteract all this hate and acting bad. When I was young, I never heard of “political correctness.” It was called being a decent human being, having manners – being a mensch. Today, people use “not being politically correct” as an excuse to be fucking assholes.

  3. It’s like he’s trying to get even more people to hate him. How much is the GOP willing to take before he destroys the fRight Wing forever? I’m not a believer in a ‘traditional’ God but do wonder sometimes if this is a test to see if we’ve learned anything at all on how to be compassionate people. If so we are failing miserably.

The Republican party should be deeply ashamed of themselves.

Sorry, but I respectfully disagree, it is not about money. It is about prejudice and nothing more! If you were correct about it being money, then why do they not complain about Viagra and other drugs that allow sex to take place? This whole idea is to fire up the right wing Christian base who hate people not like them, love to force women to have unwanted children, and once they are born they having nothing to do with the child! So to think it is simply about money is absurd!!

      • That’s BS. It does cost but the military pays 10 X’s more than that for Erectile dysfunction medication. Looking at dollars and cents to add to the Wall budget. A waste of time and money. Chump lied, again, one of many lies, when he said he would stand up for ALL Americans and that includes people who are LBGT.

  5. Dear Xena,

The best response came from the Military’s official response that it will continue to support the transgender soldiers in its midst until further clarification is forthcoming. It has to have been galling to have a commander-in-chief who is obviously politically motivated to make this policy change and who didn’t give a second thought to use the military for this purpose. After all the pentagon found out about this directive when we did.

I do believe that our Employment discrimination laws forbids terminating or not hiring because of gender or sexual preference. Trump is not setting a good example for businesses in America to hire those who want to work, will work, and can work without regard for race, color, and most definitely, because of what they do in their private lives.

Xena, Didn’t Sessions say that the opinion of the justice dept was that because being gay was a voluntary choice that they were not going to be covered under the discrimination laws? You might take note that the Military is not covered under the same rules of discrimination as the rest of the nation, so in effect while trump is saying this about the military, he at this time would be unable to make any such declaration about the rest of our citizens. SMHITD (shake my head in total disgust!)

    • Yeah, Trump thought if he just issued a royal proclamation on Twitter that would instantly make it the law of the land. You’re not a dictator, Donald, and our system doesn’t work like that.
