Tamir Rice’s Autopsy Brings Home Life and Death
Tamir Rice is the 12 year old who was shot and killed in Ohio by a cop who fired his gun in less than 2 seconds of arriving on scene.
A man had called 911 and told dispatch that a guy was in the park who might be a juvenile had a gun that might have been fake, but it was making him nervous. Dispatch put out the call without saying it could be a juvenile and could be a toy gun.
Tamir did not die right away. Reports have it that the EMT’s arrived about 4 minutes after Tamir was shot. He was taken to the hospital where he died the next day.
Tamir’s autopsy was released today. It makes the reality of life and death profound. One bullet can end a life. One bullet can cause suffering before ending a life.
One bullet.
Who was once a playful 12 year old, became a cold, dead body on a slab being examined by a Medical Examiner, even down to the length of the hair on his head. Everything about his young body became an examination and investigation, from drugs to medicine administrated in effort to save his life, to prior surgical procedures, to poop stains on his rectum.
I’m conflicted — seeing that on one-hand, the medical examiner has to do his/her job, while on the other hand, little human decency is afforded to those whose death is under investigation.
A grand jury will convene to decide whether there is probable cause to charge Cleveland police officer Timothy Loehmann. NBC reports that the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s office, which is overseeing the case, has a policy of presenting all fatal police shootings to a grand jury. “These cases are so serious, so important, that there should be a citizen review,” said Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty.
Attorney Benjamin Crump, who is representing Tamir’s parents however, says that there is probable cause to file a charge and take the case to a jury.
Crump has also stated:
“If police officers are ill-equipped to deal with children playing on the playground with toy guns, then we might have to consider outlawing all toy guns because this scenario cannot happen again in America.”
Police officers appear to be given special treatment when grand juries are called to decide probable cause. That special treatment is that they appear to be the only persons of interest who get to give their side of the story to grand juries. If that happens with Timothy Loehmann, he can tell the jurors what he felt, what he believed, his fears and the whole nine-yards in his defense for why and when he pulled the trigger.
However, the grand jury won’t hear what Tamir felt, believed, or feared when, nor after he was shot.

It shouldn’t go to a grand jury. The officer should be charged with murder and go to trial. They were told that the weapon was fake before they got there. No excuse for shooting a 12 year old at all in this manner.

Raewyn,
I agree. Even if it went to a grand jury, and the grand jury saw the video without the cop testifying, they would find probable cause. But I bet he gets a chance to testify before the grand jury and talk about how afraid he was without being cross-examined and asked, if Tamir didn’t shoot the 911 caller, then why did he think Tamir would shoot him?

I am so tired of Grand Juries keeping justice from being served in a real court of justice where a REAL trial takes place!
Tamir Rice deserves JUSTICE!
Michael Brown deserves JUSTICE!
Eric Garner deserves JUSTICE!
and so many more!
Grand Juries just want “to baby” bad cops. Where are the good cops….they should be shouting that protecting bad cops is wrong, wrong, WRONG!
The silence of the huge majority of U.S. senators and congressmen is emboldening bad cops!
We have been watching Grand Juries (with the help of prosecutors) care more about bad cops than than the lives of their Black victims.

Have I got this right… a 12 year old kid can’t play on the street with a toy gun without getting shot by the police! WTF!!! It’s absolutely appalling for lack of another descriptive. I realise the reports have to maintain a neutral stance and I just read through them searching for an answer… none given. This was someone’s precious son! It’s heartbreaking.

Kev, the toy gun looked real, but the man who called 911 was in the area, and said it was probably a fake gun. Tamir hadn’t shot at anyone. The police had to use caution but instead, the one cop came out shooting. I just don’t understand how they lack such confidence in bullet proof vests that they don’t take time to access situations before shooting first. I’m not saying that cops should walk into a gun-fight like Superman, but they can take cover while getting a handle on what they’re dealing with before pulling the trigger.

I pray people don’t start squabbling over words. It’s about Justice. It’s about fighting over rights not who holds “I can’t breath” signs. We need to stay focused on the main problem. Bad cops and bad government, stop shooting black unarmed kids and letting the ham sandwiches (oink. oink) get by with it.

Shyloh,
For me personally, as a White individual, when I become aware of a sensitive issue for the Black community with whom I am allying myself, I would accept the guidance given to me by the Black community to make my advocating more effective and to validate their concerns.
If, at the same time, I wanted to emphasize that Eric’s death was caused by an officer using a chokehold that had been BANNED by his PD department, I would simply create a sign that said:
ERIC GARNER’S LAST WORDS:
I can’t breathe
I can’t breathe
I can’t breathe
I can’t breathe
I can’t breathe
I can’t breathe
I can’t breathe
I can’t breathe
I can’t breathe
I can’t breathe
(Each line would gradually have smaller and smaller letters.)

Marianne posted the lyrics under her Youtube video:
Lyrics (c) 2014 by Marianne Barlow:
When another Black man is killed, unarmed and begging for mercy
When another Black woman grieves the loss of her son too early
When I’m sitting here safe on my couch behind my white skin shield
As the young people march through the streets, I can’t breathe
When a teenager goes to the store to get something to drink and some candy
And he never makes it back home, murdered by some vigilante
When the dead kid gets dragged through the mud, while the killer’s protected by law
And the jury lets him go free, I can’t breathe.
I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe
I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe
When another Black man goes down, shot in the back or wherever
And the cops have the power to kill, they’re held responsible NEVER
Well I guess I am lucky to be born in a skin that’s protected,
It prob’ly won’t happen to me, but I can’t breathe.
And we are none of us, none of us, none of us, none of us free
No we are none of us, none of us, none of us, none of us free
I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe…

I don’t think the “powers that be” have figured out that UNTIL they fix the injustices and stop racist, killer cops, the demonstrations WILL continue.
Remember these verses from the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar”?
CAIAPHAS
Tell the rabble to be quiet, we anticipate a riot.
This common crowd, is much too loud.
Tell the mob who sing your song that they are fools and they are wrong.
They are a curse. They should disperse.
JESUS
Why waste your breath moaning at the crowd?
Nothing can be done to stop the shouting.
If every tongue were stilled
The noise would still continue.
The rocks and stone themselves would start to sing:
CROWD AND JESUS
Hosanna
Hey Sanna Sanna Sanna Hosanna
Hey Sanna Hosanna
Protestors today have the light of truth. They are simply demanding justice.

“The Cleveland police officer who fatally shot a 12-year-old holding a replica gun in November was deemed unsuited for police service two years ago, newly released documents show.
Timothy Loehmann, now 26, was employedby the City of Independence Police Department in Independence, Ohio, for six months in 2012, the Guardian reports. In an internal memo from that November, Independence Deputy Chief Jim Polak criticized Loehmann’s behavior during a firearms training .”

They saw and did all of that in less than 2 seconds. They must have been on speed on something. The gun looked real, but the fact that even the caller was not shot at, and no shots were reported fired, should have caused the arriving cops to access the situation first before using deadly force.
