No Justice. No Trust.
On this day when America honors it military personnel and veterans for fighting to maintain America’s freedom, an American couple sat before a committee in another country and spoke about police brutality in America.
Lesley McSpadden and Michael Brown Sr. traveled to Geneva, Switzerland as part of a delegation of human rights advocates and spoke before a U.N. Committee against Torture.
Lesley and Michael are the parents of Michael Brown, who was killed by Darren Wilson in Ferguson, MO on August 9, 2014. The county’s prosecutor took evidence before the county’s grand jury, and rumors abound that the grand jury will not indict Darren Wilson.
“We need the world to know what’s going on in Ferguson and we need justice. We need answers and we need action. And we have to bring it to the U.N. so they can expose it to the rest of the world, what’s going on in small town Ferguson” said Lesley.
Michael’s parents also addressed the militarized police response to protests over the killing of Michael Brown, and that such a response violated the U.N.’s convention against torture, in which the U.S. is a signatory.
Michael’s parents urged the U.N. Committee to bring an end to racially-biased policing tactics and the practice of racial-profiling by officers in Ferguson. However, they didn’t stop there. They also recommended and requested a nationwide investigation to examine “systematic police brutality and harassment in black and brown communities, and youth in particular, saying “Methodology and findings of this investigation must be made publicly available.”
Michael’s parents along with other parents whose loved ones have been slain by police, remain strong and dignified in their mission to fight for justice while dealing with their grief.

I’ve been observing comments around the web regarding Michael’s parents bringing the issues to the UN – and I’ve yet to find one individual without prejudice and/or any knowledge about the UN Articles and what they stand for…

Hey Pilcherje! Just in case people want to familiarize themselves with the U.N., here’s the link to their website. http://www.un.org/en/index.shtml
What can we say about stubborn ignorance? There are prejudicial people who don’t understand that grand juries do not hold trial.

Thank you for posting the link Xena. Each Article is worth reading. There’s certainly more to this than the word “torture,” but singularly, that seems to be what some are focused on, missing the value of global civil rights for all. It all boggles the mind!
What Michael’s parents are doing is very powerful….I hope Ferguson is listening!

IMO, Michael’s parents want to bring police brutality to the attention of the world. I can only imagine too that tourism in America has reduced because of conceal carry laws and police brutality. Knowledge is power. The world should know. You are so right — what Michael’s parents are doing is very powerful.

The US cannot proselytize on human rights, when it cannot even put its own house in order.

Michael Brown’s father says officer acted as “judge, jury and executioner” when he shot Michael, disrespecting his body in life and death.

Much Love to you both, Lesley and Michael. Though I have lost many family members, I can’t truly feel your pain, because I have never lost a child. (though I grieve with you)
Wilson should have been arrested that day. This is now way out of control.
We should all be ONE. We should all be LOVING. We should all be EQUAL, as in the eyes of the Lord, we are!
Justice for you Michael………Hands Up……I give up…I’m unarmed……please stop.
Yet, 3 months later, Wilson is still being paid and hiding from justice.
IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE WILSON>>>>>>>WHY THE HELL ARE YOU HIDING!!!!!!!
Justice for you Big Mike.

The autopsy results, & the one close-range to the thumb wound: It seems to me this might explain Wilson’s obvious, sheer, & nearly panicked determination to kill Mike Brown? And also reaffirms why Mike struggled to free himself from Wilson’s (death-) grip and ran like hell. I realize this has probably been discussed already, but I wonder what type of trouble an officer would be in — somewhere else where they actually Are held accountable, I mean — for inflicting such a wound? And: Is it possible that Wilson might in fact have feared this being discovered?
SOMETHING made him jump from the vehicle to pursue & murder poor Mike Brown in broad daylight on a street crowded with witnesses… What exactly it was that made him lose it on that day at that time still puzzles me.

Renahv,
Absolutely! Wilson was intent on killing Michael, even if it meant shooting him in the back, which would have been the case had Michael not turned around and surrendered.

It’s a crying shame that Americans must reach out to the U.N. on Human Rights issues.

This is good. Going before the UN world court. Things improved when Black people used the civil rights movement and tv and film footage to benefit. Those scenes going around the planet, showed other people the human rights that was so hailed was false. This could have the same impact.
