Two Men Sentenced To Prison For Beating Of DeAndre Harris
On August 12, 2017, DeAndre Harris took part in a counter-protest against the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was physically assaulted by six White Supremacists in a parking garage and suffered extensive injuries, including broken ribs. Photojournalist Zach D. Roberts witnessed the assault.
This is the same rally where James Alex Fields Jr. has been accused of driving a car into counter-protesters, killing Heather Heyer and injuring others. Fields has been charged by the State of Virginia and with federal charges and is awaiting trial.
Out of the four men arrested for malicious wounding of DeAndre, two have now been convicted and on August 23, 2018, sentenced to prison. A third defendant, Daniel Patrick Borden, has plead guilty and awaits sentencing. Tyler Watkins Davis awaits trial.
Jacob Scott Goodwin of Arkansas has been sentenced to serve 10 years in prison with 2 years suspended. He must have 20 years of good behavior and serve probation. In court, Goodwin’s initial defense was that he was acting in self-defense after seeing Harris take a swing at the leader of a North Carolina white nationalist group. That man pressed charges against DeAndre but DeAndre was subsequently acquitted.
Charlottesville Circuit Judge Richard Moore handed down a six-year sentence for 34-year-old Alex Michael Ramos of Jackson, Georgia. Ramos’ sentence includes 3 years of probation that if violated, converts to prison time. Ramos is a onetime member of a militia group called the Georgia Security Force III%. He ran across a street to interject himself into the confrontation, kicking and stomping DeAndre.
Another man, Richard Preston, was sentenced this week to 4 years in prison for a separate incident during the rally. Reportedly an imperial wizard in the Ku Klux Klan, Preston was convicted of firing a gun in the direction of a black counter protester. Like the parking garage beating, Preston was caught on video.
