The Stephon Clark Autopsy Belies Reports By Police Who Shot An Unarmed Black Man

We’ve already seen where the victim’s criminal past is reported in the media, then used by others to justify extra-judicial executions. There are CONVICTIONS that carry the death penalty. Suspects or defendants are given opportunity of due process. However, when a “suspect” has not been arrested, charged with committing a reported crime, and CONVICTED, but shot dead when it is a fact that the suspect was unarmed and posed no threat, how can it be justified? How can police officers not be held accountable? Such actions repeat themselves over and over again and we also learn that the story given by officers is not what is recorded on video. Yet, they are still given discretion to let their purported fear take human lives.

The police were called one evening around the 18th of March 2018 from a Sacramento, California neighborhood regarding a young man vandalizing residents’ cars. This was not a young man committing crimes of violence which required a swarm of police officers to arrive in the vicinity of the complaint with guns drawn and a helicopter circling above.

But that is what happened. A 22 year old Black man, Stephon Clark was outside his Grandma’s home with only a cell phone, which means no other implement used in committing acts of vandalism were on his person, when he was confronted by a swarm of law enforcement officers who shouted at him but who then proceeded to fire at least 20 gun shots at him. As soon as this happened, the police muted the sound from their recording machines.

    In my opinion, this was an horrific execution.

    It is frightening and heartbreaking.

    Stephon should be alive today. Shot in the back!!! Terrible!

      What bothers me is when the story given by officers to justify why they fired their weapons does not line up with what is seen on video. When that happens and officers are charged and video shown at trial, juries either acquit or hang. We saw that with Michael Slager and so many others. Mark Anthony Barmore was shot in the back in the daycare center of a church in the presence of children and staff. He was unarmed. Not one of the two officers were charged.

      It’s very disheartening.

    Why am I not surprised? This is getting to be an old, endlessly repeating story. Aside from the obvious racial prejudice, I’m beginning to think that prosecutors and judges are afraid to hold police accountable.

      I had been reading about what happened to Stephon since it happened, but was waiting for more information. I’m happy that Gronda blogged it. The autopsy speaks volumes. Like I commented to Yahtzee, even when officers are charged and brought to trial, and videos show that their story doesn’t line up with what happened, juries either acquit or hang. The system stinks.

          Robert,
          True. People are subject to biases, favoritism and fear. The impression to the public regarding the Blue Line is that if a jury convicts one cop, they have convicted all cops working in the same department. The fear of retribution is real, even if the truth of retribution isn’t. A potential juror in one case told the court that even if there was evidence to convict, he would not vote guilty. At least he was honest.

    The video was just disgusting. They yelled show “Me your hands!” and then immediately opened fire. They began shooting so quickly Clark didn’t have time to do anything, and then the police hid behind the corner of the building as he lay dying. No one even went to check on him. So if you do go to show a cop your hands they shoot you to death and claim they thought you were going for a gun, but if you don’t show them your hands you probably be beaten or tased for resisting arrest. Lose-Lose situation.

      That’s the way they do things — by seconds. It’s an expectancy that people react to commands like robots. That of course, comes with an assumption that people know they are the person being addressed.
