Guns Have Changed, But Not Gun Laws
I posted the following 30-second video in the comment section on a post, but feel it deserves its own post.
The organization that made the video is States United To Prevent Gun Violence. Its website says:
“States United to Prevent Gun Violence is a grassroots network of 32 state affiliates working to make our communities and families safer.”
The most recent school shooting has resulted in teens becoming activists. Maybe a movement titled “Student Lives Matter” (#SLM) should start, since more families can now relate to how guns are used under government sanction to take innocent lives.

I don’t accept the premise that everyone needs a gun to protect themselves.But if I did, I wouldn’t believe an automatic weapon is the one to have any more than I believe they are necessary to go hunting with. Nor do I believe any person needs more guns than he has hands to shoot them. I think all the young lives expended just to give the NRA it’s brief of selling more weapons and exerting less control is far too high. One life is too high. Make it illegal for the NRA to fund election campaigns and soon maybe the politicians will be able to legislate according to what the people want.

You are right — there are ways to exercise self-defense that does not require a gun nor result in killing. But see, there are laws against assault, so people can’t use non-weapon means and say they thought they were going to shoot them, especially when they are unarmed and alive to give their side of the story. So, there are people who need guns so they have a reason to use them based on their assumptions of what someone else was going to do, and to make sure that no other story is ever told.
Then you have the nuts using automatic weapons who enter shopping malls, theaters, schools, concerts, and kill and wound people because THEY (the shooter) has a personal problem.
I wish that everyone would learn the background of the NRA. They still have the same motivational roots as they did in 1871.

I love the advertisement.
Like everyone else, I’m sick and tired of the talking points that guns don’t kill. After all a man can kill with his bare hands. But a man with a gun can kill more efficiently and a man with an assault weapon can kill lots of peoples more efficiently.
There is no way a 19 year old should have access to an AR 15 weapon. period, end of story.

You bring up an important point that I’ve heard time and again about guns. “Guns don’t kill. People kill.” What those raising that argument are really saying is that guns are a weapon of choice. Cruz’s weapon of choice was, as you said, an AR-15, and he should not have had access to it.

If hope and prayer is the solution, then I think that the suggestion that we eliminate the security detail assigned to King Little Hand Donnie, and supply him with a bucket of hope and prayer! If that is good enough to protect the nations young people, then that should be good enough for him!!

You brought something to my memory. During the campaign in 2016, there were Trump supporters who criticized Hillary for talking about gun control, and they said she should give up her secret service because they carry guns.

A thought about “hope and prayer.” Thoughts or hope and prayers are for those without authority that are extended to grieving families and friends. It’s not for politicians who have authority to make changes in laws that can reduce the number of deaths caused by guns. Their logic is like going to the doctor with an ailment that is easily diagnosed and the doctor walks away without offering any treatment and saying his/her thoughts and prayers are with the patients. To add salt to the wound, the doctor then says that there are responsible people who take care of their health, and that’s why he/she is not writing prescriptions; conducting tests; treating patients.

The 2nd amendment did not stop a 1994 Ban on Assault Weapons from becoming law. It expired in 2004 where the republican TX Rep. Tom Delay led the fight to make sure it was not extended.
The 2nd amendment had nothing to do with the 2005 bill signed by Pres. Bush to immunize gun manufacturers and dealers from law suits. 59 Dems signed this bill including Senators Bernie Sanders of VT and Bill Nelson of FL.
The 2nd amendment had nothing to do with the ALEC driven bill passed in Florida in 2005, “Stand Your Ground” gun laws.

I understand what you’re saying and thanks for that run-down. The thing is, the NRA uses the second amendment to promote owning guns. Their agenda that goes back to 1871 is to promote “Anglo” gun ownership and teaching militia and cops how to shoot to kill civilians. It was not about hunting nor self-defense.
For more than a decade now, “I thought he had a gun” has been a mantra defense for police officers who kill unarmed people, the majority of whom are minorities. Without guns on the streets, police would not have to fear for their lives by way of assumption. So, I’m going to the root instead of the branches. When evil is sanctioned by the government against its own citizens, first starting with one specific group, it expands to the masses. What we have now is a mess.

Yet the right wing in this nation says that our young people do not possess enough wisdom to deserve our attention! To make matters worse they indicate thru their words and actions that a “Black” persons words do not matter! I truly wish that many of the rest of us possessed the wisdom that this young man shows in his words!

Critics either do not know, or have forgotten, that it was young people who effected the change that removed the military draft and lowered the voting age. Our young men 18, 19, 20, were being drafted yet had no voting rights to choose to elect those who supported or did not support going to war.

While disgusting, it’s no surprise. When specific groups of people believe that they have protection from the powers-that-be, they often unzip and expose themselves all the way. From 2009 through 2016, all it took was for them to know that their local Sheriff, or Police Chief, or Mayor, or Governor was opposed to President Obama. Now, they have an outspoken bigot in the White House who has appointed bigots such as Jeff Sessions. That makes them think it’s open season on spreading their hate and doing hateful things.

I’ve shared that video for a couple of years now! I love it. Shared it just the other day! So relevant!
Had President Obama even suggested some of the ‘fixes’ being discussed now, he would have been made to help build the scaffolding for his lynching. Banning bump stocks, stricter background checks. Even Rick Scott, Florida’s pro-gun Governor said ‘nothing is off the table’ including a ban on AR 15 style weapons.
The hypocrisy of the fRight wing never ceases to amaze me. I don’t believe all mass shooters are mentally ill (although sane people just don’t do things like this). Women are also prone to mental illness and we aren’t out there shooting up concerts and movie theaters. 98% of Mass shooters are white males. Are white males the only people on anti depressants?
Grenades don’t kill people. People kill people. << so absurd, this stupid argument that guns don't kill people.
