When school bullies turn into killers

Dakota Mutchler, a 17-year-old junior, said he used to be close friends with Cruz but hadn’t seen him in more than a year following his expulsion from school.

“He started progressively getting a little more weird,” Mutchler said.

Mutchler recalled Cruz posting on Instagram about killing animals and said he had talked about doing target practice in his backyard with a pellet gun.

“He started going after one of my friends, threatening her, and I cut him off from there,” Mutchler said.

    It does not justify killing, but any kid with his social history is going to have some problems. Living in foster homes , losing both his parents to death recently is enough to make a kid act out. It’s too bad nobody grabbed him after Al those incidents and got him some therapy and other help.

      Some people can be helped, and others cannot. When children are raised under dysfunction, or have unaddressed mental disease, and then they are left on their own when turning 18 and seem to survive, their behavior and thinking processes are the norm for them. They think the world is wrong and they are right. Having guns freely available in America helps them carry out their evil deeds. He could not have walked into that school with a sling-shot and killed 17 people and wounded others.

    Adopted as an infant, his mother just died in November. He bought the gun legally here in Florida is what I’m hearing this morning. 😦

    Until these mass shootings personally affect the families of those who make the rules, nothing is going to change. I believe we’re too far gone for anything to change anyway as far as guns and any semblance of control is concerned.

      I don’t know if having personal experience will help change things. Congresswoman Gabbie Giffords was shot in the head and would have died had it not been for her aide attending to her wound. Congressman Steve Scalise was gravely wounded at a baseball game practice.

      Like you said, we have far too gone for anything to change.

      Illinois fought conceal carry, and the court said that not allowing conceal carry is unconstitutional.

      It’s going to take more than state regulations — it’s going to take a constitutional change.

    Hello everyone,

    Once again we see how a person can talk about committing crimes. Make all kinds of threats on social media,make videos about how they’re going to shoot people and most importantly be on the radar of law enforcement(federal,state and local) and nothing is done until the shooting starts. We saw this with Matthew Riehl, Elliot Rodger,Devin Kelley,Caleb Sharpe, now we see this with Nikolas Cruz.

      Yes. Let’s add Dylan Roof to that group of names. His social media flourished with racial ideologies and wanting a race war.

      There’s a thin line in the law. People can’t be arrested for thinking things; they have to commit an actual crime. LE depends on the public to keep them informed but there are times when the public becomes weary because they don’t see LE doing anything so they stop being their eyes and ears.

      Assault weapons have no purpose other than to massively kill. It might be time for the federal government to setup a database of assault weapon purchasers and profile their reason for owning them.

        I agree there’s a thin line in the law. I also agree that people can’t be arrested for thinking things..However,when people talk explicitly and write about killing, that’s different.(All that I mentioned and more) . LEOs shouldn’t ignore those people.When people have criminal backgrounds and issues with police(Devin Kelley and Matthew Riehl and more) and law enforcement doesn’t warn their LEO brethren or don’t do proper background checks to stop people from buying guns,that’s different.

          I agree with you. Enough is not being done to prevent crimes, including violent crimes. Enough is not being done to keep track of groups known for promoting violence, and it seems to me based on Dylan Roof and now Cruz, that such groups like recruiting those with mental illness to do the dirty work for them.

      The only government agencies that have authority to deprive people of freedom and property before the exercise of due process, are law enforcement and courts. Mental health professionals have to be very careful in protecting the rights of patients. Parents have limited choices, pretty much limited to placing children under the care of child protective services.

      There are common sense procedures that parents and/or guardians can and should use. Like with Adam Lanza, the Sandy Hook murderer. His mom knew that Adam had mental disease, but she kept guns in the house anyway. With Nikolas Cruz, the family he moved in with allowed him to keep the assault rifle in their house. His social media postings and then purchasing an assault rifle should have raised red flags really high — but there was no way of coordinating the events so LE knew.

      The door keepers to some LE agencies are those who make the decision of whether something is important or not. The calls never get to proper personnel with authority to make decisions. If Cruz’s posting on social media were phoned to the FBI, the calling party would be told to post it on the ic3.gov website. Many local police do the same — the moment they hear “internet” they tell the caller to post it on the ic3.gov website. Other actions or threats are not followed-up on. For example, if you called your local police about a person who came to your house and threatened you, beat you up in school and was suspended, and then posted a threat on Facebook, they are more than likely to reduce the call to one involving the internet.

        It’s such a complicated situation, but you’re not wrong in your assessment. I do hate how mental illness is only an excuse if the perpetrator is of a certain complexion. People do know that mental conditions effect anyone regardless of race, but with how mainstream media treats it, others wouldn’t realize it.

          Indeed. When people have mental illness and their families allow them to get away with wrong even when the person knows right from wrong, that irresponsibility for their actions and words carry over to other areas of their life. The Cruz brothers no doubt did and said horrible things at home that were dismissed and justified to be caused by their mental illness.

            Thanks! The “mental illness” card has been overplayed so much and it’s quite fallacious. I forget the exact source, but people with mental conditions and illnesses are 8 times more likely to be victims than perpetrators. It can set a stigma against people with real psychological issues. Even people I know with mental conditions would NEVER do anything like what these school shooters do.

      Hello Rose and thanks for your comment. From what I understand, the first thing to do is alert the school. Whatever proof you have, such as screenshots, should be given to the school and your local police. The best to you, your child, and all at the school.
