Erica Garner, who became an activist for police reform after her father’s words of “I can’t breathe” were used as a rallying cry for a movement, died Saturday after being in a coma for several days, according to a statement posted to her official Twitter account. She was 27.
Garner, the oldest daughter of Eric Garner, suffered from cardiac arrest a week prior and was being hospitalized in Brooklyn, New York, her family said.
“Erica the world loves you. I love you. I am glad you came into our lives,” family members said in a tweet. “May you find the peace in the next life that you deserved while you were here.”

I echo the words of Mr. Sanders that Ms. Garner was an inspiring social justice activist who tragically walked out onto the international scene due to the senseless murder of her father. Rest in peace Ms. Garner, we are less of a world without you.

Hello Kate.
So true. It is tragic that such a young life has transitioned.

I asked Mr. Sanders, and I am still asking; Where was he when she needed him?

I am so sad. She deserved so much better. I have daughters. I had a mother. I always feared that someday something would happen with me to make them cry. They were hostages that the police, the whole damned system held to punish and make suffer if I did not comply. We fight, but are we any closer to winning? We can’t stop… Beautiful people like her insure that. But it would be so good to be able to look up and see progress and not just bones. I so wish we could win SOMETHING that she could take comfort in. To know that it counted.

My heart breaks for Erica and her family and loved ones. *tears*
I join you, Xena, in your words to Erica: “Erica, your spirit continues to live, to motivate. Thank you for sharing your life with us.”
Eric Garner received no compassion when he said ELEVEN times “I can’t breathe.”
This had such a deep impact on Erica Garner that she said the following in the video at this link ( https://vimeo.com/133725854 ) :
Xena, thank you for the very important videos that you posted in your article. Thank you also for using your blog to be a voice advocating for victims without a voice from Trayvon in 2012 through those of today.
