    mistake after mistake in this case; even if he couldn’t buy guns legally what was to stop him buying them under the counter? Maybe a bit harder but not impossible.

      John,
      What you say is true. It’s kinda like before abortion was legal. When it was illegal and daughters, sisters, girlfriends, etc. were dying in back alleys, their families had no redress. In the case with the Texas shooter, whatever business sold him the guns cannot be charged nor sued because he cleared the background check, and the families of those injured or killed can forget about suing the Pentagon.

    My heart aches knowing that this unthinkable horror might have been averted had the killer been listed by the Air Force in the U.S. data base that would have prohibited him from buying a gun.

      Yahtzee,
      I thought that whenever an individual was admitted to a mental rehab facility, that their social security number is placed in a data base that prevents them from purchasing guns. So, this goes back to the facility, as well as the Pentagon.

    This is another example of how the greatest injustice(the preferential and lenient treatment for white criminals) eventually turns into a greater tragedy.

    This event also shows how people respond to tragedies. When Sujillo Saipov ran over 23 people killing 8 wounding 15. Immediately the response is terrorism from politicians(POTUS on down). Immediately charged with terrorism by law enforcement. James Alex Fields did the same thing . Not immediately called terrorism by most politicians(POTUS on down). No charge of terrorism by law enforcement. Stephen Paddock, James Hodgkinson, Devin Patrick Kelley not immediately called terrorism. All of the perps I mentioned were white men. Saipov is a white man even though his birth place Uzbekistan is in Central Asia. Don’t let people fool you. The only one called a terrorist was the white guy who is a Muslim.

    While I believe mental illness is a serious issue. I have a mentally ill brother. Kelley wasn’t mentally ill. Too often the mental illness statement is used as an excuse as a way to downplay and offer sympathy for the white criminal. People like Devin Patrick Kelley, Elliot Rodger,James Holmes, Adam Lanza, James Hodgkinson,Stephen Paddock, Caleb Sharpe,etc were and are not mentally ill. All of these individuals planned the active shootings they carried out. For the most part they left detailed reasons why. Some make videos in preparation of the eventual shooting. People like Holmes booby trap LEO responses. People like Lanza and Kelley know how to lock information on devices that law enforcement can’r easily open. Do these mentally ill people or people of sound mind?

    It’s also interesting that the one person to call out correctly Devin Patrick Kelley’s crime was Miley Cyrus. She called it what it was”An act of terrorism committed by a white American male.”

      The government has given a definition to the word “terrorist” or “terrorism” and limited it to apply to the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims”.

      As you have pointed out however, it also applies to killings committed against civilians by those who are Muslim who might not have political aims. In my opinion, James Alex Fields had political aims when he mowed down protesters killing Heather Heyer.

      Actually, I can go back further and say that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold committed an act of terrorism when they terrorized an entire school.

      Also in my opinion, Dylan Roof had a political aim when he killed 9 people in a church because of the color of their skin. He wanted a race war.

      What we have in this nation are acts being defined based on the color of perpetrators. That’s so the federal government gets to decide how surviving perpetrators are charged and sentenced — was it an act of terrorism or a hate crime? Truly, I don’t see the difference. It’s all driven by hate, and it all causes terror.

      I remember after 9/11 that people said they were not going to give-in to acts of terrorism and continue their lives in the same manner as they did previously, BECAUSE terrorist want people to be too afraid to be in crowds, etc. However, I’m pretty sure that if a survey company did the math, they would find that civilian response to mass shootings is just what terrorists wanted.

      Hate is not a mental illness. It’s a choice. Using hate to harm and kill others is not a mental illness. It’ a choice. The only thing that seems to have changed throughout the decades that separates serial murderers (who killed one at a time), from mass shooting is their choice of weapons.

        James Alex Fields violence was political. He was part of the torch carrying angry chanting Unite the Right mob the night earlier.

          EXACTLY! Yet, Fields was charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, aggravated malicious wounding and failure to stop in an accident that resulted in death — not an act of terrorism. White Supremacists organizations are classified as terrorists, and Fields was not silent about his ideologies.

    In 2012, Devlin Kelley broke out of a mental health institution called Peak Behavioral Health Services in the El Paso, TX. He was found by police.

    “As per NBC News,” the person who reported Kelley missing told El Paso officers that Kelley “was a danger to himself and others as he had already been caught sneaking firearms onto Holloman Air Force Base,” where he had been stationed, according to the police report.”

    “He “was attempting to carry out death threats” he had made against his military superiors, the report said.”

    This is who was allowed to legally purchase 4 weapons in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017.

      What we have in the United States is a system of law enforcement that takes little concern in reports of threatening people, even those who are capable of carrying out those threats. Well — let me change that. Someone can see a stranger with a gun and call the police, and the police is more likely to arrive and take out “the threat”. (More recently, John Campbell III, Tamir Rice and at least 3 others.)

      However, personal experience that reports a person who is dangerous and threatening to others gets tossed under the domestic and civil category and those afraid of the person are told to get a lawyer to pursue legal options. In other words, State and District attorneys don’t want to prosecute dangerous people for misdemeanors. They need blood and gore — the actual committing of a crime. There’s good and bad to that. Of course, there are constitutional rights to be protected, but also, there are the constitutional rights of others that should be equally protected.

    I will never understand why someone didn’t lob a Hymnal at his head as he made his way row to row. I think we’re too far gone with weapons for any measure of gun control to be effective. It’s like the war on drugs. It just made things worse. This has been the hardest thing for me to have to accept.

    And when we talk about Law enforcement having weapons that we can’t have, I’m almost ready to cross over to the other side..

      According to a surviving witness, Kelley was shooting either from or through the roof. That pretty much renders Trump’s opinion wrong, saying that parishioners should have been armed. People can’t shoot at someone they can’t see, nor take a chance on ricocheting.
