Dylann Roof Convicted

The jury in Dylann Roof’s federal trial deliberated less than 2 hours, and convicted him on all counts of hate crimes, obstruction of religion and weapons charges.

The panel of nine Whites people and three Blacks  will reconvene on January 3, 2017 to decide whether Roof is sentenced to death or life in prison without parole.

Minutes after the verdict was read, Roof told U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel he wanted to represent himself during the penalty phase.

Fox news reports;

The verdict came after days of emotional testimony from people who survived the shooting and witnessed the aftermath. During closing arguments earlier in the day, Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan Williams told jurors Roof waited until the Bible study group had its eyes closed for prayer before he opened fire.

Williams said Roof, who posed in photos with the Confederate flag that appeared in a racist manifesto, believed black people were animals and less than human when he violated the sanctuary of the church and killed nine people. “Those people couldn’t see the hatred in his heart any more than they could see the .45-caliber handgun and the eight magazines concealed around his waist.”

On December 8th, we posted on the trial with daily updates.

In the following video, criminal defense attorney John Burris speaks about the sentencing phrase and what Roof might argue in representing  himself.

  1. If he is sentenced to death, will the State still try him?

    • Mindyme,
I believe so. One of the things that prosecutors are aware of are appeals, and appeals to death penalty cases can go from court to court for years. South Carolina might not be likely to take a chance of not putting him on trial and having him escape the federal death penalty on appeal. In fact, I think that Roof wants to represent himself during the sentencing phrase as part of a scheming plan to appeal on the basis that he did not understand the law and consequences.

Hahaha! You mean, had he killed the 9 people in the church while carrying a badge and claiming their prayers placed him in fear of his life, that the jury might have hung on a verdict?

If Roof had been a cop, we might not have seen a trial for 3 years.

      • Like. I feared for my life cause those bibles are powerful… UGH. Just saying. But I get what you are saying. He is an evil person. I would love to know WHERE THE HE** his parents were. Firing guns outside him home. All the ammo. Something is so wrong with them in my opinion. I’ll never get how parents are not aware what their children are doing.

        • Shyloh,
I think his mom was concerned. An investigator said that she is the one who produced the photos of Roof with the confederate flag, holding a gun, etc. Roof started his decline in 2012 at the age of 17 when he heard about the killing of Trayvon Martin. His young, impressionable mind absorbed all the racial bigotry against Blacks. I also question how parents allow a teen to drop out of school in the 9th grade? That should have been a sign to his parents that he might have had problems with social skills. It was Roof who should have been in a church studying instead of being isolated from reality playing with a gun.

  14. It is always about being above reproach, but trust me… that is a lot harder to actually do. However, I am please to hear he did not get away with such a despicable crime.

    • Hey CFBoston,
It was pretty much a given that he would be found guilty.

About the being above reproach, I think that falls under the words of not returning evil for evil. Roof decided that Blacks are evil, and he would murder innocent people in the most safe and peaceful venue — a church.

It’s difficult to figure out. He was going to plead guilty if the feds took the death penalty off the table. That sounds like he wants to live. But, to represent himself in the sentencing phrase and not let his attorneys give a psychological defense an honest try, sounds like he wants to be sentenced to death.

      • Maybe he just wants the platform to spew his deranged views. I hope they don’t let him carry on in that vein. Yuck

I think you’re right. There are cases of White Supremacists and sovereign citizens who represent themselves, and their defense is that they are right — they are the wise — and if the jury doesn’t do what they want, they are “race traitors”, unpatriotic, and giving up their freedom and betrayed the White race.

You might remember hearing about Frazier Glenn Cross. He represented himself during the sentencing hearing. Here he is giving his defense.

Cross was sentenced to death, still saying that he was right.
