Racist Hatred Comes Out Against Mothers of the Movement

At the Democratic National Convention held July 26, 2016, nine mothers appeared on the stage.  Those nine were:

Sybrina Fulton, mother of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin;

Gwen Carr, mother of 42-year-old Eric Garner;

Lezley McSpadden, mother of 18-year old Mike Brown;

Lucia McBath, mother of 17-year-old Jordan Davis;

Wanda Johnson, mother of 22-year old Oscar Grant;

Cleopatra Pendleton-Cowley, mother of 15-year old Hadiya Pendleton;

Annette Nance-Holt, mother of 16-year old Blair Holt;

Maria Hamilton, mother of 31-year old Dontré Hamilton.

Geneva Reed-Veal, the mother of 28-year old Sandra Bland

The nine mothers named above represent Mothers of the Movement because their children’s names helped energize the Black Lives Matter Movement and Black Lives Matter network.  Their goal is aimed at enacting better gun control measures, repeal laws that might shield vigilantes from prosecution, and increase transparency and accountability for officers who kill in the line of duty.

One would not know that if reading some of the racist tweets on Twitter, who have limited Mothers Of The Movement to be anti-cop.   Rawstory has already reported on the racist speech.

The grieving mothers were accused of not raising their children properly.  The racists called all victims criminals.  Evidently recognizing that Sandra Bland was not a man to fall into the category of “thugs”, the haters alleged Sandra  committed suicide because her mom did not get from Illinois to Texas in several hours over a weekend to bail Sandra out of jail.  (Well, they do have imaginations that Blacks have super powers but have yet to explain how commercial airlines do.)

The racist bigots prejudicially jump to conclusions including that all of the victims were killed by Whites, or White members of law enforcement while committing crimes.  Their racist tweets  are outright misrepresentations.  Oh heck — I’ll just show you a few of them and let them speak for themselves ….

Just to show the ignorance of the racial bigots and set the record straight ….

Wanda Johnson is the mother of Oscar Grant III.  Twenty-two year old Oscar Grant III was fatally shot by Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Department, (BART) officer named Johannes Mehserle in Oakland, California on New Year’s Day, 2009.  On July 8, 2010, Mehserle was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to two years in prison.  Oscar was no criminal, and although the punishment for killing Oscar was light, the fact that Mehserle was convicted means that Mehserle is the convicted felon.

Annette Nance-Holt is the mother of Blair Holt, THE SON OF A COP, who in May 2007 at the age of 16, was killed on a public transit bus in Chicago while shielding a friend.  Annette is a battalion chief for the Chicago Fire Department.  Blair’s dad Ron, is a Chicago Police Commander.

The man who killed Blair was found guilty and sentenced to 100 years in prison.  However, in September 2015, his case was sent back to court for re-sentencing. Blair’s killer is Black.

Cleopatra Pendleton-Cowley is the mother of Hadiya Pendelton.  On January 29, 2013, Hadiya was 15-years old when she was killed by gang crossfire in Chicago.  Hadiya was an honor student, and one week before she was killed, she performed at President Obama’s second inauguration.   The man who killed Hadiya is awaiting trial.  Her killer is Black.

Maria Hamilton is mother of Donte Hamilton, who was 31-years old when he was killed by Milwaukee Police Officer Christopher Manney in April 2014.  Manney has not been charged, but he was fired for violating the department’s pat-down rule.

Here is the appearance of Mothers Of The Movement at the DNC Convention.

I am proud of their faith, courage and strength.

  2. This kind of ignorance was expected. It doesn’t come as a surprise. Like Sybrina said, “Unless you walk in their shoes, you won’t understand. it comes with the territory. I am so of proud of these courageous women. As my strong mother says “Ignorance is a terrible thing.”

  3. Oh well, here goes another carton of ice cream. Those Moms presented themselves in such a gracious manner while they held the platform in last night’s DNC Convention. The prejudicial backlash just shows how insidious racism is in the USA.

    Real World: Our recent 2 US Presidents were involved in smoking pot etc during their high school / college years. If they had been arrested or killed, they would not have attained their positions of power.

    Few Black and White parents have raised teenage sons without having to see them through their troubled, rebellious times. Many of these brave Moms were denied this opportunity.

      Don’t you know? (snark) White Supremacists think that Black kids and teens are suppose to think like adults. All they are suppose to know is “Yes Ma’am.” “No Ma’am.” “Yes sir. No sir.” Anything more is acting thugish.

    I am appalled at how low these hate-filled racists went in describing these grieving mothers and their victim children! These haters are the ones whose mothers did not raise them right and whose mothers did not guide their hearts so that they would be kind, caring, and compassionate and so that they would not be a negative drag of hate on our society.

    I so admire the Mothers of the Movement for their graciousness, strength, kindness, caring, and steadfast determination to bring about change so that others will not endure what they and their children have endured.

  5. Victim blaming. Whenever there are victims of abuse, it rears its ugly head.

    “andieiam” is the wife of a police officer. She has made herself known for indiscriminately blurting out ignorance and bigotry in a Trump-like fashion. It’s unfortunate that her delusional confidence makes her appear credible to the mindless followers who latch onto her hateful rhetoric.

    • Hey Human. When I was pointed in the direction of her tweets that I posted in the article, I could hardly believe that she would be so ill-informed about the mothers and victims.

      • Judgmentalism is a combination of ignorance, lack of empathy, and low self awareness. Add an inflated ego, an urge to self-promote, and aggression. Such people have an agenda that precludes a genuine concern for correct understanding or correct information.

          You definitely have an understanding that is needed in order for decent folk not to blow their lids when reading filth like that against the mothers of children who were killed. Thanks so much.

    Songs of the sixties have been going through my head today:

    “What the world needs now is love, sweet love
    It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
    What the world needs now is love, sweet love
    No, not just for some but for everyone”

    “Come on people now
    Smile on your brother
    Everybody get together
    Try to love one another
    Right now”

  8. It’s not unexpected that racism will float to the top of their cup of hatred and self-loathing. These people are very sick. The strength of the Mothers displayed on that stage will continue to see them through their suffering in spite of these demented individuals.

  9. Two sides to a story

    They were beautiful. And could be a lot more radical and less gracious. Tamir Rice’s mother was not among them because she feels not enough is being done to reform police work in this country, and she hasn’t supported a candidate because she’s not hearing enough about reforms.

    I think she’s right! And we need her voice too, and those of many other mothers or relatives of people slain by police who are hardworking activists for LE and justice system reform.

    • Hey Two Sides. I agree — we need the voices of all mothers of all victims. Personally, I don’t particularly care for the endorsement of Clinton that came about in order for Mothers of the Movement to be heard, but I can push that to the side because their having a voice is more important than politics.

  10. Here’s what I’d like to say to virulent parent-blamers:

    Parenting isn’t a reductive formula of heredity and environment. It’s not just the parents’ genetics, plus how they administer love and discipline.

    Do you know *anybody* who turned out to be exactly what their parents wanted them to be? (I didn’t think so. And even if they did, there’s probably a deep flaw you just don’t know about yet.)

    Souls come to earth with their own agendas.
    A child is born with whole lifetimes of experience and memories that are usually not accessible, but they count.

    Parents need to realize that they can never take total credit (or blame) for a kid, because that soul has lived in a lot of different bodies, over the centuries. About some things, it might be set in its ways. In other words, a child is partially but not totally moldable.

    Kids need to realize that they can never lay total blame (or credit) on their parents, because those are the parents they chose – through some mysterious unknown mechanism, and for reasons they don’t currently understand.

    Parent-blaming doesn’t take us very far along the road to truth.

    • Pat,
      What we don’t see are the same people who blame Black parents for failing to raise kids properly, blame White parents for the same when their children are killed by guns. Their hypocrisy reeks with racial bigotry. For example, they denigrated the woman in Minnesota whose daughter was in the car when an officer killed the boyfriend. But, what about the parents of Jeremy Mardis? Little Jeremy was killed by Louisiana cops. His life mattered.

      They like throwing around numbers and percentages saying that more Whites are killed by officers than Blacks, but you never hear them say that the White parents were bad parents.

      I suppose what I’m trying to say is that parent-blaming is only used by those holding white supremacist ideologies, and only against Black parents. Their words and double-standards are clear. They do not want people to come together in effort to resolve the problem because their propaganda in one breath is that Blacks are the problem, while in the other breath they say more Whites are killed by officers than Blacks.

      Photos can be embedded in comments if the photo is on its own page. The URL is put in the comment section that converts it to show the photo. I’ve not done photos that way, but Yahtzee has. Maybe she will jump in here and let you know how she does it.

        It will then appear on a new window/page. Then, right click that image with your mouse and choose “copy image address” by left clicking with your mouse.

        Come to your comment box here and right click with your mouse and choose “paste” by left clicking with your mouse.

        The URL will then appear in your comment box here, and when you click the “reply” here, your comment will post and the photo will appear along with your comment.

          Important note:

          If, when you post the URL for the photo here, you happen to see the word “encrypted” or you happen to see a “?” in the URL link, the photo will not appear on this page – only the link will appear which will then require readers to click the link to see the photo.

          If that is the case, you might want to look for another copy of the photo with a link without the word “encrypted” or without a “?” so that the photo will appear here.

    • Hey Shyloh! Yeah, by him claiming copyright to that collage, he says what the collage says, and it is opposite of what he had stated publicly.

      As a believer that every American citizen has the same rights, I must include him in the right to pursue the education of his dreams. San Joaquin is not an ABA accredited law school. He has not earned a Bachelor’s. If he successfully completes law school, he will be 45-years old, with no work history under his belt for the past decade. Under those circumstances, having a JD from a law school that is not ABA accredited is not likely to help him start a career as a lawyer.

      If he is thinking about going into solo practice fresh out of law school, he will be facing experienced lawyers in court who will run circles around him and tear him up.

      And let’s look at this positively — maybe his classes and studies will not provide him with time to be on social media insulting and harassing others.

      • I think progressives want to believe that each battle is decisive but it isn’t.

        Slavery is abolished but not the racism that justified it.

        A hundred years later, thanks to activist citizens, President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act and the government is still fighting nullification.

        The law grants gays equal protection and almost within seconds a movement emerges designed to impose the same restrictions differently.

        There is no such thing as a decisive victory when we are dealing with people who honestly believe they are ‘entitled’ to rule over and degrade people they deem inferior.

      I think that it is DancingPalmTrees that you quoted. If I remember correctly, it’s a statement she made on a reblog of the post here. With Word Press, it requires two things to “ping back” to other blogs to accredit them. The first is that you link to the other blog where the statement is made. That means copying the URL and pasting it in your post. The other thing is to have the option under Settings to contact other blogs when you link to them.

          Word press offers so much with their blogs that it does take some time to learn how it all works. With some things, if I don’t use them on a regular basis, I forget how. When I have questions about how to do things with Word Press, I generally start with their support forum.

          If there is anything I can do to help, just let me know.
