      Hey Ren! I caught part of it on television. I thought about 9/11 when our then VP was in a secure hiding place, but still when President Bush addressed the nation about that horrible event, I listened without prejudice. It was a time for our nation to come together for the benefit of the grieving families and those wounded still in recovery. I’m hoping that the nation can put politics aside during this dark hour and have compassion for the survivors and families burying the dead.

This year, mass shootings have already claimed 61 lives. One class of gun, semiautomatic rifles, is largely responsible. But this nation cannot be a hostage of fear. We can make it stop.

    THE PERFECT KILLING MACHINE.
    The AR-15 assault rifle has the speed, accuracy, and power of no prior civilian weapon, shooting up to 45 rounds per minute.

    …more Americans want assault weapons banned outright — 57 percent now support a federal bill to do so. And as a country, we know exactly what needs to be done to protect ourselves, because we’ve done it before: The National Firearms Act of 1934 rightly regulates the machine gun, and it could rightly regulate the semiautomatic assault rifle as well. We must hold our Congress accountable for arming criminals and terrorists with military-style weapons.

    Unless this nation wants to see more mass killing in our schools, churches, theaters, nightspots, and office buildings, we must address the casualty quotient, which vastly increases with the use of semiautomatic assault arms. The idea of restricting unfettered access to assault weapons is only considered radical when it comes out of the mouth of a modern US president. To most Americans, and every other democracy on the planet, it is rightly considered common sense.

    The Supreme Court in the 2008 Heller Decision did not rule that there could not be regulations on gun ownership. The following was written by Scalia.

    The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms. Miller’s holding that the sorts of weapons protected are those “in common use at the time” finds support in the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons. Pp. 54–56.

    It is time to place more value on the lives and well being of our US peoples over the power, callousness and greed of the NRA.

    It is so heartbreaking to know that President Obama’s request to Congress to ban assault weapons and to tighten gun control with stronger background checks still has not caused Congress to act.

    Just a year ago today precious lives were lost because of the bullets of a heinous assassin who never should have been allowed to own a gun.

    I pause to remember them and pray that they are resting in peace.

      Yes. This needed to be addressed in 1999 when Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine high school with high powered rifles. The media and others get all into the psychology of killers, but they never ask the question, “Would they have taken that action had they not been able to access guns?”
