It is shocking that the couple had to stay in Hawaii for 6 months and then the charges were dropped. There should have never been charges against them. Walking while Black — kissing while gay. Bigotry causes financial damage and impugns the integrity of the system.

Yes Yahtzee. The results of false arrests like that also have their effective beyond the judicial action. Most people having to spend 6 months away from home awaiting trial would lose their job. They would not be able to pay their mortgage or rent, car note, etc. Their furniture and belongings could be set out on the street. How do they maintain and sustain their lives?
While a settlement or judgment might give them a fresh start, it does not repair the damage of their credit reports, employment history, etc. Just imagine having to interview for a job and being asked why you were unemployed for 6 months? “I was on vacation in Hawaii” which might sound as if you don’t need to work, or “I was falsely arrested” which could end the interview. It happens to too many people.
