Oklahoma Teenager Shot By Homeowner After Doorbell Prank

This has shades of Ted Wafer, who said he thought that someone was trying to break into his house.

End Stand Your Ground

A 14-year-old Oklahoma honor roll student is recovering after he was shot by a homeowner while playing a dangerous teenage game of ringing door bells as a prank in the early morning hours of New Year’s day. The homeowner was not arrested, but could face charges later.

According to KWTV, the teenager, identified as Cole Peyton of Pryor, Oklahoma, was with friends as the boys were playing the doorbell prank game, which the local police chief, Steve Lemmings, called “ding-dong ditching”. The doorbell prank is a very dangerous game in which teenagers ring a doorbell or knock, then run or hide before someone answers.

The unidentified homeowner reportedly went out to his yard and fired several shots at the boys, striking Peyton in the back and arm, with one bullet puncturing his liver. Peyton, who is on the honor roll, football, and wrestling teams at Pryor High School, is recovering in a local…

  1. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERE ARE TOO MANY GUNS WITH STATES SUPPORTING “STAND YOUR GROUND” LAWS. These foolish boys were running away and so, the shooter should have waited for police..

    • Gronda,
When kids pulled that prank in our old neighborhood, they were yelled at and threatened that their parents would be told. Then too, it always helps to have a large dog bark before they reach the front door. It made no sense shooting at them, and even less sense for the man to lie and say someone was breaking-in.

You reminded me of something. Not long ago I told someone that they use a hammer to kill a fly. They replied that they like the weight of the hammer.

People without guns lives matter also! Too many guns, too few consequences of using one to take the life of another person…

  5. The key here is:

went out to his yard and fired several shots at the boys, striking Peyton in the back

No imminent danger to this man. No attempt to gain entry to his house. No need for reasonable force. No cause to defend his property, person, or another human being. No belief of a threat. No threat of violence or criminal intent.

This homeowner needs to be charged with attempted homicide and prosecuted to the full extent.

  7. Mindyme hit the nail on the head when she said “When one has a hammer, everything has a tendency to look like a nail”. Just the other day I was engaged in a conversation about gun control and one of the things that I said was that when a person has a gun, it seems to give them a false sense of security and they are bigger and much badder than anyone else. The homeowner should have definitely been charged in this instance. Where is (or was) the sense of imminent danger if someone rang his doorbell….. and tried to run away?

Proof that a gun isn’t just another tool like a hammer or a knife.

Two sides to a story: A gun is one of the few “tools” whose primary purpose is to kill! Whether the game sought is four legged or two legged the ultimate goal is to kill. The myth that a gun is for defensive purposes is similar to the myth of the unicorn, we all hear about them but they never seem to be found, except in the mind of the NRA and various gun fanatics!
