    My thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones.

    May there be healing and change.

      Jason Johnson was from pretty close to the area where I live,
      about 25 miles south of here.

      “He started Monday and he was so proud of what he had accomplished, and rightly so,” Johnson Engel tearfully told NBC News. “The other day he looked at me and hugged me and said, ‘Mom, how long have you been waiting for one of your kids to go to college?’ And I said, ‘Oh, about 20 years.’”

      Thursday morning would be the final time she would see her son alive. Johnson kissed his mother before racing off to class.

      “Love ya,” he told her. “I’ll see you this afternoon.”

        Johnson was proud to be at Umpqua Community College, said his cousin, Jennifer Bailey. She described Johnson as intelligent, loyal, good at math. He was often impeccably dressed and had a knack for fixing things without instructions. He had gotten his GED about six months earlier, completed drug rehab about two months ago and had “a light in his eye that hadn’t been there before.” Johnson “was ready for a change,” Bailey said, “and then this happened.”

        “He had such a good heart,” Bailey said. “He always extended his hand to people who were hurting to help them.”

        Bailey said she hopes her cousin is remembered for never giving up on himself.

      Oh Roderick, I want to read that speech. Word Press does burp at times. It burped last week as I was writing a comment. I’m still not receiving email notifications of comments, new subscribers, etc. In a way, I’m rather enjoying checking the admin side of the blog for comments and the other stuff as I have time, rather than having emails collect in my inbox.

    “Lawrence Levine appeared to be a man of simple needs, living alone in a rented cabin on the North Umpqua River. But his mind was complex and full of poetry.

    “He tended bar, taught college and guided fly fishers on the North Umpqua River, a waterway he knew like the back of his hand. But most of all he was a writer.

    “… who sought refuge in nature. He could pick out trees and find his way around the river. He loved wildlife too, even writing poetically about buzzards.

    “He was at home in the wilds of Oregon.”

    Friends and family remembered Lucerno Alcaraz as sweet, selfless and innocent. According to Umpqua Community College, Alcaraz received a 2015-16 Umpqua Scholar award, a scholarship that covers the full cost of tuition. Her sister, Maria Alcaraz, posted on Facebook: “I never got the chance to tell you how proud of you I was. You would have been a great pediatric nurse.”

    Lucero was a freshman at UCC where she had yet to pick a major, her younger sister confirmed to the outlet. She was debating studying to become a nurse or a pediatrician, and her sister, Eileen, 14, shared that Lucero loved to draw. A heartbreaking Facebook post written by Lucero’s older sister, Maria, reveals that the bright young student had her entire college tuition paid for by scholarships. “You were going to do great things love,” Maria wrote, mourning the loss of her baby sister.

    Too many senseless violent deaths! Praying with doubts I’ll ever get past bewilderment.

    Praying all those who might use violence against humans today will choose a different option, that victims of hurts will not harm themselves or others coping with their pain.

      Wonderful people with bright futures are gone too soon, and their families and friends in such painful grief over the loss of their loved ones.

      May they receive a strong supportive embrace from their friends and community.

      May those gone too soon rest in peace, and may they live on in the hearts of their loved ones.

    Quinn Glenn Cooper

    Thursday was the 18-year-old’s fourth day in college, his family said in a statement released Friday afternoon. In June, he had graduated from Roseburg High School.

    “Quinn was funny, sweet, compassionate and such a wonderful loving person,” the statement said. “He always stood up for people.”

    Cooper enjoyed voice acting and playing the online game Ingress with his older brother, Cody. In pictures on social media sites, Cooper wears an MMA T-shirt, and his family said he planned to test for his brown belt on Oct. 10.

    “I don’t know how we are going to move forward with our lives without Quinn,” they said. “Our lives are shattered beyond repair. We send our condolences to all the families who have been so tragically affected by this deranged gunman. No one should ever have to feel the pain we are feeling.”

    “We have been trying to figure out how to tell everyone how amazing Lucas was, but that would take 18 years,” the family wrote. “Lucas loved FFA, volunteering at Wildlife Safari, and Saving Grace animal shelter.”

    Leila Goulet of Wildlife Safari said Eibel spent the summer of 2014 participating in the park’s in Junior Zookeeper program. “We all love him here,” she said. Eibel had a calm, level-headed disposition, making him perfect for working with animals, Goulet said. He mostly assisted with reptiles and small mammals, but he was so willing to help out, he ended up taking on tasks in other areas of the park, too. “He was a super kind-hearted kid,” she said.

    Moore, who graduated high school in Reno, Nevada, lived in Myrtle Creek. Facebook pictures of dogs and horses suggest a woman with a passion for animals. She had two sons also living in southern Oregon.

    Rebecka Ann Carnes

    Rebecka Carnes had the kind of smile that made you smile, her family said in a written statement, and she wanted to keep people smiling.

    She had just started college with hopes of becoming a dental assistant.

    Carnes could make you think that she was a quiet and serious girl, but the twinkle in her eye gave it away — it was a hint that silliness and laughter were about to come, her family said.

    They praised Carnes as “loving, compassionate, dedicated, and strong.”

    The 18-year-old enjoyed the outdoors. She hunted, camped and rode all-terrain vehicles in the mountains. She played soccer and softball throughout high school.

    “She was special and unique but she was also just like your daughter, sister, or friend,” her family said.

    Treven Anspach

    Anspach was a member of the Sutherlin High basketball team that won the Far West League basketball championship in 2014 and played that year in the Oregon Athletic Coaches basketball all-star series. “He always showed up first at practice, and he showed me what it meant to be on the varsity team,” said Shelton Jackson, a Sutherlin teammate. “He didn’t lead by being vocal, but by example.” Daniel Leeworthy, who coached Anspach at UCC, said in a Facebook post: “All he wanted to do in life was to marry his high school sweetheart, be a firefighter like his dad, and to serve others.”

      Trevor is a hero. As he was dying he rolled toward Lacey and moved his body over hers.

      After Lacey heard a shot so close to her head her ears were ringing, she realized the boy next to her, Treven Anspach, had been shot and he was bleeding, Scroggins said. That’s when Anspach started rolling toward her.

      “I felt Treven’s body as it moved over mine,” Lacey told her father.

      “The blood of that boy that covered my daughter saved her life,” Scroggins said.

    Kim Saltmarsh Dietz

    Karen Crocker went to school with Dietz, graduating with her from Mission Viejo High in 1974.“She was my friend from the first day of school,” said Crocker , who works as community services director for the city of Aliso Viejo. Crocker described Dietz as an excellent athlete who played volleyball, basketball and powder puff football. “One of my fondest memories of Kim was when we played powder puff,” Crocker said, laughing.“She was tough, dedicated and determined… (She) just tackled the girls.“ Crocker said she and Dietz went to parties and the beach. And at Mission Viejo High, they pulled pranks.

    Kim Saltmarsh Dietz loved animals friends and family more than money, and moved from San Clemente to Oregon for its rural lifestyle. “She got what she wanted in life,” said Dietz’ stepmother, Trudy Saltmarsh. “She got her husband and daughter, which meant the world to her.”

    Denton said Dietz, as a teen, was injured while trying to capture a horse as it ran down a street in Mission Viejo. Dietz spent time in a hospital after the animal kicked her in the head.
    “She was always trying to help people and… animals” Denton said.

      I am saying prayers for Julie Woodworth.

      Her boyfriend described her in the article linked below:

      ‘She’s a bright light,’ he said. ‘She’s adventurous and such a giver. She gives to everyone, not in material terms always but in any way she can.

      ‘She gives everything to her friends and loved ones and she’s so selfless.’
      Tyler, who met Julie through his sisters, added: ‘She’s my adventure partner. We hike everywhere and do things like that.’

      He also spoke of her talent for art, saying the student, who works in Walmart to fund her education, ‘loves to paint’ and often creates artworks for friends and family.
      ‘Julie paints whatever is on her mind. A lot of it is very holistic and inspired by nature.’

      Her childhood friend wrote this about Julie:

      ‘This beautiful girl I have been friends with since middle school was injured in the tragic UCC shooting in Roseburg Oregon,’ reads the page, which was set up by close friend Chrislynne Michelle.

      ‘Julie is one of the sweetest, most down to earth people I know. She would never hurt anyone or anything. She always wants to learn and grow.

      ‘She always tries being optimistic. So I know she will make it through this like the champion she is.
