Paralyzed Man In Wheelchair Gunned Down By Police

Jeremy McDoleJeremy McDole was shot in the back and paralyzed when he was 18 years old. He was confined to a wheelchair and living in a nursing home in Wilmington, Delaware. On Wednesday, 10 years after the bullet that paralyzed him, and in his wheelchair, Jeremy was shot again. He was shot to death by police officers who arrived in response to a call of a man who had a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A bystander caught the incident on cellphone camera.

The incident is being investigated by officials from the Delaware Department of Justice’s Office of Civil Rights and Public Trust. That department reviews every incident that involves a police shooting resulting in injury or death. The 4 officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.

The police have released few details, saying that Jeremy had a handgun when he was killed by the police. There are many unanswered questions.

Editorial opinion of the author.

Of course, the officers could not read Jeremy’s mind to know whether he thought that he had to first take the gun from his waistband in order to obey the command to put it down. They had no knowledge of whether, after being shot the first time, if his physical actions were responding to feeling pain and limited his ability to raise his hands.

In my opinion, doubt is always raised when the only method of self-preservation is to stand in the open with weapons drawn when suspecting that the person is armed. It’s a showdown that a lone citizen against armed officers cannot win, even if able to react like a robot or trained dog to obey without thinking.  No one seems able to obey quickly enough. It automatically defaults to law enforcement using deadly force.

My reason for having this opinion in this situation is because in the video, we see that the first officer was out in the open when giving the command to put the gun down. He then moved for cover behind a vehicle. The other three arriving officers however, did not seek cover. Why stand in the open giving commands to an injured person in a wheelchair without knowing if he has the ability to obey? They could have taken cover and talked to him, at least until and if it came to a point where Jeremy took out the gun and aimed it.  The officers were apparently wearing bullet proof vests, and they apparently place confidence in that protective gear because it gave them the courage to walk in the open with guns aimed at a person who they believed to be armed.

We will never know what was on Jeremy’s mind because he is dead. Only those officers involved get to tell what they thought as the reason behind their actions of using deadly force first without considering alternatives.

    • Horty, thanks for the reblog, dear friend. What I see in the video is that police officers have no fear of those alleged to have a gun. They walk right out in the open so it becomes a showdown of who can fire first, and the officer the with gun already drawn shots first, whether or not the “suspect” plans to. We, the public, are left with the question, since when does “I thought” become a defense for certain people, but not all?

      • Agree! I have a hard time with that. Maryjane’s son is s policeman …. this topic has been a sore one. We don’t talk about it anymore, didn’t talk much about it anyway.
But … I’m educated about it & updated on these events. It doesn’t seem it will stop anytime soon.

“Old school” police officers never entered into a situation with guns drawn unless they didn’t know what type of situation they were walking into. The new training has officers behaving like war-zone military personnel. The “them vs. us” mentality is not good for America.

Yes. The attitude appears to be that everyone is a liar; everyone is a criminal; everyone intends them harm. There are situations where they really need to discern, even with caution, instead of using deadly force first.

          • Yep. I can see where a person in a wheelchair with use of their hands can have and use a gun. What I can’t see are officers approaching the person without taking cover, and with guns drawn, so any movement by the person can be perceived as a threat justifying the use of deadly force.

My guess is that more than a few of the new recruits are vets of Iraq and Afghanistan like the idiot who murdered Christian Taylor.

When you mix performance enhancing drugs (steroids, testosterone, HGH, etc.) with PTSD this is what you get—a lot of dead unarmed black and brown young men.

The 4 officers should be swinging at the end of a rope. At no point did I see him with a gun. I saw him moving his hands over the 1st wound and appearing to be dazed.

    This is insane.

      • Exactly, and shooting at someone in a wheelchair is just as bad as shooting at a young kid playing with a toy, or at someone already down.

These cops exemplify the term “bully” I will kick and stomp on you no matter how bad a shape you’re in………………wheelchair…………..hell, that just made him an easier target.

Yep, shooting an invalid, what manly men.

        • Had Jeremy had the gun in his hand, and appeared to be alert, I would give the officers the benefit of the doubt. What I see in the video is a man who appears to try to get his body up in the wheelchair to keep from falling off. He was already shot, probably twice, before they opened fire on him. At least Jeremy is at peace. I would like to know what those officers are thinking — if they have any remorse.

          • I still can’t wrap my head around them shooting at someone in a wheelchair. Like Jeremy was in an armored vehicle or something that was very mobile. It pretty much takes 2 hands to spin a wheelchair around so hey, even if he had a gun, there were over 13,325 other options and I could name them all if given the time.

Our ‘Big Brave Officers’ in action; those last two officers came on a mission to unload their clips into the guy, I don’t think he had a chance, no matter. They could have applied a different solution, if they had wanted to. It definitely didn’t have to go down the way it did.
All across the country officers are showing no respect for human life, like we’re all the enemy, and they’re not being held accountable for their actions.
    Somethings got to give.. .

Jeremy, I wish the cops had been calmer with you and talked with you instead of repeatedly shouting at you to put down some gun that you weren’t even holding. I wish they had simply gone behind your wheelchair and restrained your arms if needed.

I wish you were alive and given a chance to recover in body and in mind to look forward to each new day with a smile and hopefulness.

May you rest in peace in the Lord’s loving arms.

We the living need to remember you and seek to bring about change.

My prayers and thoughts are with your loved ones.

That is a very good point you make, or that you quoted, he was in a wheel chair meaning he is handicapped meaning he may not be able to even communicate the way we do he may have had hearing issues speech issues etc…

Not saying that is the case here but its the approach officers should have taken into consideration this man was a sitting duck before a bunch of trigger happy thugs who call themselves cops

Thanks for the reblog, dear friend. Although it had been reported to the police that Jeremy had a self-inflicted gunshot wound, we don’t hear the first officer ask him if he is shot. I agree — a better decision could have been made.

      • Thank you for presenting it. Sometimes I really wonder about the competency level of a lot of these officers. I guess it’s true that common sense ain’t all that common… Keep doing the amazing job that you are doing. You have another award coming your way soon. Guess how I know!

        • Common sense and thinking is not in their training anymore. It appears that more and more are trained like the military to follow certain procedures regardless of the situation. Because they act like robots following procedures is probably why they expect for average people to also obey like robots, in spite of their yelling and screaming; in spite of whatever physical or mental limitations they are suffering, and in spite of being in fear.

Oh no! More awards? LOL! I have your nomination for the Sunshine award but have not taken time yet to work on it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Xena,

Per our phone discussion you are 100% correct these officers did not approach him with an ounce of caution they did NOT take cover, they walked to him guns drawn out in the open and opened fire on him meaning the actions of the officers prior to them shooting him fire squad style prove that he was no threat to the safety of anybody if that were the case they would have done this from a safe distance and used the cars that were parked to protect themselves you don’t see that here instead what you see here are 3 cops walking towards a sitting duck and gunning him down.

  15. Terrible. When will this ever cease? When will police officers not shoot first? Again, I believe it comes down to intense psychological testing during application phase of those wanting to become police officers. I believe some have ulterior motives and are psychopaths who want to act out their thoughts legally. There are too many wearing the uniform who don’t belong in them.

  16. i dont understand this at all……they claim some 911 caller told them the guy had shot himself and please send the police, BUT that actual story says an officer was already on the scene before the first shot was fired……at no time do you see any weapon in this mans hands, so for him to have shot himself that would have had to happen in front of the officer and then that officer would have to have seen him put the gun in his waistband AFTER shooting himself……..i do not think the guy ever had a gun that day, the first shot was by police and they knew they needed to finish the job because they already messed up big time.

    • Bill, I’m not sure of the sequence before the video but what see we on the video is that the cop shoots him before the gang of 3 arrives with their guns drawn. Jeremy is bleeding from his chest, but they yell out commands as if they were talking to a person who had not been shot. That’s like tell a woman in labor pains, “Let me see your hands.” She would probably call them every name under the sun other than a child of god.

      Like

      • the police story is NOT possibly true, they claim they shot him as he reached for his gun in his waistband BUT they also claim they recovered a gun near his wheelchair later…..NOT POSSIBLE IF that story about reaching for a gun is true then the ONLY place they could recover the gun was from his waistband……and there is no way he shot himself in the chest with that shot heard on the video, you can see him clearly enough to know he did NOT take a gun reach out in front shoot himself in the chest and them calmly return the gun to his waistband!

        Like

        • Bill, correct. The chest wound came from the first officer. I can’t see why that officer thought it was necessary to shoot Jeremy. The more this happens, the more it’s convincing me that shooting and killing is the punishment for not immediately obeying commands regardless of the circumstances.

I agree that if the gun was in his waistband, it would have been there when his body fell over the side of the wheelchair and not next to him.

What I’m thinking about is that current police training does not take into consideration the human reaction to pain and fighting against death. Jeremy was already wounded in the chest when the officers yelled at him to show his hands. Do they really think he was listening, or worrying about that pain in his chest? It looked as if he actually tried to raise himself out of the wheelchair and stand, although he was paralyzed. That’s a human reaction of trying to get to help or away from the situation and not a situation of thinking he could pull a gun and shoot 4 officers.

All the while, those officers had opportunity to take cover and talk to Jeremy rather than running in Rambo style right in front of a man who they thought had a gun.

        • TY for that, her call makes no sense at all…….so a guy tries to kill himself and is on the ground after shooting himself, but then he decides to get back up in his chair and somehow makes the gun disappear…….first off a person that has to use their hands to lift themself into the chair could NOT be holding the gun while doing that, he would need BOTH hands free to life himself(i have a very bad back and often have to use my arms to sit down or get back up from any chair)…..and at the end of the cal he was still trying to get back into the wheelchair according to the caller, i dont even think she heard a shot or saw any shot, somehow very wrong with her entire call……
