I suppose that the overall goal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples has been obtained. That’s the only good that comes out of this.

Kim Davis, the anti-gay Kentucky clerk that was jailed last week for repeatedly disobeying court orders to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, has just been released from jail.

U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning ordered Davis to be released on Tuesday, but only with the understanding that she is not to interfere with same-sex marriage licenses any longer. According to reporter Dave Weigel, there was the sense that the defiant clerk may opt to stay in jail.

Davis’ release became an option after the staff at her Rowan County office began issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, and at the request of the plaintiffs that sued her. Judge Bunning agreed to her release, now that her office was doing its job – but Davis is not to meddle in same-sex marriage licenses once she’s out of prison. The court order said:

    I’m not happy with her support by politicians who should be supporting the constitution, nor claim that she’s supporting her constituents, which she clearly has not – not all of them.

      If she is, as stated in the article religiously opposed to having her name appear on same-sex marriage licenses, then why doesn’t she quit? I disagree with her beliefs, but I have NO problem with her having them. And if she believes that strongly, she needs to quit and find something that does not make her feel she is violating them. No one would blame her for that. But this is BS!!

      I can admire someone for standing up for what they believe, even if I don’t agree. But if she really were to stand up for what she believed, she would quit her job. This is just attention whoring

        Yes, she should quit. However, her religious beliefs only go so far…her religious/moral conviction ends when it comes to giving up an $80,000 a year cushy job.

          Yahtzeebutterfly, you’re absolutely correct. Too many “religious” (note that I did not say spiritual) people pick and choose scriptures. They certainly don’t acknowledge the ones that speak to their own situations. How many times has she been married???

    She is being supported by Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz…can we say Dumb and Dumber??!! I know she can’t be fired because it is an elected position. But she SHOULD be impeached and fined for the $$$ she cost the County/State.

    When religious freedom deprives or imposes upon the religious freedom and constitutional rights of others, it’s not religious “freedom.” Freedom is the right to worship by choice.

    As a little girl, and through adulthood, I’ve heard at least a million times that religion and politics do not mix. Kim Davis ran for, and was elected to a public office. It is not a faith-based public office. Now, she doesn’t want to do the job she was elected to perform.

    What I see with Davis, and those politicians supporting her disobedience, is a rebellion against the constitution and the laws of this land.

    The marriage licenses now simply have the name of Rowan County on them. Kim Davis’ name has been removed from the licenses.

    I still have a difficult time comprehending how a group such as the Christian Religious Right, that are a huge majority of the population, per their claims, could possibly claim to be persecuted by such a small number of people not of their same faith…. Simple logic would seem to indicate that it would be impossible physically for a few to persecute the majority… I must have missed that class in school…

      Well Mothman, the Christian Right, which I think was once called the Moral Majority, has a big mouth and think that because they yell the loudest, that they are the biggest group of Christians in America. We used to call them the moral majority because they demand that the majority of the world adopt their brand of morality.

      As the Bible says, a tree is known by its fruit. As a brother in Christ once said, if you want to know what sins people struggle with, just listen to what they preach against. If the Christian Right cannot see marriage equality in any spectrum other than what two consenting adults do in private, then they are showing their true ignorance for why marriage licenses became necessary.

      They would have stoned Mary and when Jesus washed Peter’s feet, the rumors would have flown throughout Jerusalem.

          I just did. That was a good one! You know, I consider myself pretty average and think that about half the people in the US are smarter than I am. Then I read some of the comments on AOL and lower that amount to 5%. And just think how many of them are allowed to vote!

    Apparently, Kim Davis was moved to become a Christian about 4 years ago. Perhaps the emphasis of the church she became involved with/connected with was on being born again so that she could put what she considered her “sins” behind her.

    Some types of fundamental churches emphasize morality and sins in order to gather in and offer a fresh start to people. The problem occurs when such churches only nurture such people by feeding them morality lessons and by connecting salvation only to repentance instead of also emphasizing Biblical teachings on love, being nonjudgmental, helping others, and being altruistic.

    I think the result such a fundamentalist type of approach leads to mechanical “rule following” and, thus, a desire/imagined-calling to control other people. Spiritual growth then becomes stunted, and such fundamentalist followers never have a chance to begin to comprehend God’s spirit and love.

      I read that Kim Davis belongs to the Apostolic denomination. Of those churches and members that I am familiar with in that denomination, the church promotes a superficial, outward appearance of faith. The women are not allowed to cut their hair, wear makeup, nor pants. They cannot polish their nails, nor wear jewelry beyond a wedding band and wristwatch. Skirts and dresses have to be long. In other words, the men fight against lusts that they blame women for.

        I found this article which points out that the Apostolic denomination interprets the Bible literally and that it is God’s law that is to be followed.

        From the article:

        “So how did Davis become the center of a national firestorm? That has a lot to do with how the legal advocates who share Davis’s belief that the Bible, not civil law, is the ultimate authority, took that belief to court.”

    From what I understand that when Davis was elected to her position the law in Kentucky still defined marriage as between one man and one woman. The Supreme Court changed that. When she was elected to office she also swore to uphold the laws and her defiance to do so now shows she is not upholding her oath or job.

    I have no issues with one’s religious beliefs but when she refused to do her job she was now forcing her beliefs on others. When the law changed and conflicted with her beliefs she should have resigned. A person should not force their beliefs on employers or those that they serve…..what’s next……shopping at a Wal-Mart and having to find a clerk who will scan your bacon or shellfish because a Jewish or Muslim might refuse to because it’s against their religion? Or the recent news of a woman who is a flight attendant on a specilized airliner and no longer wants to touch or serve alcohol. They accommodated her in the beginning until those who had to also do her job started to complain, not to mention that this airliner has planes so small she might be the only attendant. The list is endless and could go on….work in a bookstore and refuse to sell a book on witchcraft or fifty shades of grey because it’s against your beliefs.

    Practice the religion of your choice, believe what you choose to believe but it is also my right not to believe what others believe and not have their beliefs forced on me. But more important don’t take a job or stay in one that conflict with your beliefs or where you feel you might be forced to impose it on others.

    Anyone notice the thumbs up pic of her husband? In my lifetime interracial marriage was still illegal in 1/3 of the U.S. Kentucky was one of the 16 states bound to the1967 US Supreme Court ruling on Loving v. Virgina.

    Can’t help but wonder if her church was around then what their miscegenation policies and related scriptures were.

          Many people embrace a religion that agrees with their own prejudices and also their impression of their natural father when growing up. As a child, if led to believe that dad favors some children over others, they will look for a religion where their Father does the same.

          That is also why there are many people who live by righteous spiritual principles today but who say they are not “religious.” It’s because the God that man represents to them is not the Christ of the Bible. If I had not walked this walk with Christ, and my first experience knowing God was via Kim Davis and her church, I would run in the opposite direction.
