Cucumbers Recalled Due To Salmonella Outbreak

food-recallFor those who live, or know someone who lives in the following states;

Alaska; Arizona; Arkansas; California; Colorado; Florida; Idaho; Illinois; Kansas; Kentucky; Louisiana; Minnesota; Mississippi; Montana; Nevada; New Jersey; New Mexico; Oklahoma; Oregon; South Carolina; Texas; Utah; and Washington.

Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce of San Diego is recalling cucumbers that were distributed in the above-mentioned states.  The cucumbers were grown in Mexico.

Health officials say the cucumbers are the likely cause of hundreds of illnesses since July 3 and the Aug. 17 death of a 99-year-old woman. Half the people who became ill are under 18 years of age.

Washington state health officials say nine residents have been sickened from the cucumber-related salmonella outbreak. Three cases have been reported in Oregon, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control.

In Idaho, health officials say eight residents have gotten sick. One of them was hospitalized but has recovered. Idaho officials are investigating six other possible cases linked to the outbreak.

    For once, my cucumber allergy is a good thing in light of how many veggies we eat around here …

    The salmonella in those cucumbers sounds yucky. Thanks for the heads up.

    It’s not a good time to love cucumbers.

    For those of you who are concerned about the possibility that the cucumbers you bought were involved, here is a link to the distributors web site that shows who their customers are. Note, that Wal-Mart is on the list…

        You’re welcome! What is/has been unsaid is that many of our fresh produce items are susceptible to contamination in transportation and storage as well.. Now to follow up on that statement, how many of us are aware that many of the “fresh” produce items we buy at our local farmers markets are actually bought from the big produce vendors and sold to you at a huge profit…

          Sounds as if we need to go directly to a farm to be sure of the source.

    • Olive Garden and Red Lobster are also on the list. I don’t buy produce from Wal-Mart because the majority of it is grown in other countries and maybe because of the shipping time, it looks dead when put on the shelves.

    • Mothman,
      Thanks for the link. It’s overwhelming. Is there anything that we can purchase with confidence that it won’t make us sick?

        Xena, That is a question that I’m not sure has a truthful answer. It would seem that anything we eat, drink or breath will in some way contribute to our death… Oh well, I aint going to worry about it too much, simply because I am dying of old age anyway. Too many more important things to worry about. Such as true equality for all people in this nation and just as important justice to be afforded to all people equally!
