Freddie Gray Died From Injury Like Diving Into Shallow Water

Freddie Gray, 25, was arrested on April 12, 2015 following a foot pursuit by Baltimore police officers. He was placed in the back of a police van that stopped several times, at least once where Freddie’s legs were shackled. He was unresponsive when the van arrived at the police station, and died a week later at a hospital. His death sparked protests over police brutality.

Officers arrested in the death of Freddie GrayThe Baltimore Sun obtained a copy of the Freddie Gray’s autopsy. The medical examiner concluded that Freddie suffered a single “high-energy injury” that was like those seen in shallow-water diving incidents.   The medical examiner concluded that Freddie’s death fits the medical definition of an accident, but ruled it a homicide because officers failed to follow safety procedures “through acts of omission.”

Freddie was loaded into the van on his stomach. The medical examiner speculated that Freddie got to his feet and was thrown into the wall during an abrupt change in direction. He was not belted in and his wrists and ankles were shackled, which made him “at risk for an unsupported fall during acceleration or deceleration of the van.”

The mysterious 45 minutes of Freddie Gray's deathMarilyn Mosby, Baltimore’s state’s attorney charged six officers involved in Freddie’s arrest and death. Officer Caesar R. Goodson Jr., the driver of the van, is charged with second-degree depraved heart murder. Three other officers are charged with manslaughter. The remaining officers face lesser charges.

There appears to be more than several videos of the police van as it made stops, and the officers’ actions at each stop. The medical examiner’s report addresses the videos, giving some explanation into what happened during the 45 minutes from when Freddie was arrested, until he was taken to the hospital.

The Baltimore Sun reports:

The injury to Gray’s spinal cord would have caused loss of function of his limbs, and would have “direct effects” on his ability to breathe, according to the autopsy.

Police had said in a court filing that the second passenger reported hearing Gray banging and kicking through the metal divider before the fifth stop. Allan said that would not have been possible given Gray’s injuries, but he may have been suffering a seizure at the time, which could have caused the noise, she said.

All of the officers indicted have plead not guilty.  Their trials are scheduled to begin in October.

I still do not think this happened in the van I believe he was tackled or something to that effect on the street which caused the injury.

    • I think it was a combination of both.

      • Mindyme and Santiago, I too think it was a combination of both. Regardless, the cops had a duty to strap on his safety belt, and a duty to get him medical attention. You know the law for child safety-car seats? Imagine a parent hogging tying their child and throwing him/her into the floor of the back seat assuming the child would be safe. Then, blaming the child for crying.

        • He was so helpless. He must have been horrified. I wonder if they laughed……..

What cracks me up is there are some claiming this report states that the cause of death was due to the van. This report does show us how Freddie died this report simply shows us the injury that caused his death which was a “High energy impact injury” that means it could have happened in the fan or he could have been tackled and fell down in a awkward way or someone could a took a bat to his neck now am I saying a bat was used no what im saying is a high energy impact injury is consistent with any of those arguments these little know it alls lurking get on my friggen nerves

        • Actually NO!!!! I disagree one thing I did not factor into this, there was another passenger in that van on the opposite side, He never stated they received a rough right so I believe the single high impact injury took place when the fan made that un reported stop.

And again the spin artist are at it, They are now shifting the blame on the hospital SMH… No its NOT the fault of the hospital.

          1) Freddie was found un responsive in the back of that van

          2) That means the injury that left him that way was at the hands of police

          3) if people really believe its the hospitals fault I challenge you to ask yourself the following….

if an officer gets shot in the line of duty and later dies at the hospital is it the hospitals fault? Obviously not

From a medical standpoint, this was a fatal injury. He had no chance ….

    • Horty, thanks for the reblog and adding your medical expertise. I can’t imagine what it is like to be restrained and have no control over the actions of the body. That’s a real helpless, and hopeless position to be in.

      • Welcome, dear friend! You are correct …. helpless & hopeless. If I remember correctly, Freddie could barely walk when he was on way to the van. I think it started there & definitely was aggravated by that “ride”!

        • Yes, Horty! The video shows that Freddie could not get his feet under him.

Is it possible he could barely walk (use his legs) because, at the least, his circulation was cut off by the officer who forced Freddie’s lower legs to his back (pretzeled him) and then forcefully pinned his lower legs down by kneeling on them when he was on his stomach on the ground. And by kneeling on them, caused further painful damage? ie numbness, lack of sensation.

Surely looks like the driver slammed on the brakes and killed a shackled, helpless young man. Truly disgusting disregard for human life. Depraved Heart.

          • I think this whole medical condition started on the street. I was concerned when I saw the video of Freddie “walking” to the van. Then it was aggravated during the ride. The force sustained in the steer & the van was significant. You don’t “walk” that way Nya simple hit. At least the medical examiner’s report seems to had been truthful. There can’t be a “way out of this”!

          • Hey Horty! I agree and I’m not a physician like you are. What we see on the video of Freddie being taking to the van cannot be denied. It looked as if he was suffering from paralysis.

          • That’s what I originally thought when I saw that video. He couldn’t get his legs under him. I still didn’t know what had happened in the van. Sad, sad ….. total and complete abuse & over use of force.

I can’t wait to hear these cops explain why they set upon a person that wasn’t doing anything wrong.

    • Chuquest, I think they already showed their hand. Sounds as if their defense is that Freddie was kicking and screaming making it his fault that they had to severely punish him. When he stopped screaming and moving around, they thought he was obeying their commands rather than dying. Same crap we’ve heard before.
