Little Time To Write, Rubick’s Cube, and Open Discussion

Caterpillars, moths, butterflies, and all creatures great and small,

My plate overflows. Since I won’t have much time for writing, please use this thread to discuss or continue discussions on whatever you want. Hopefully, I’ll be back to my form of normal after the weekend.

cat_with_rubix_cube_by_Squeaky_Scorpio58So, what’s this thing about Rubick’s Cube? What I’ve recently realized is that meeting and making new friends often centers around specific topics or interests. Seldom do we actually go beyond certain subjects to get to know other things about each other.  I have several new friends who did not know that I love puzzles.

As a child, it was crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Even as an adult, wife and mother, there was a table in our recreation room (now more commonly called family room) for the specific purpose to put together 2000 piece jigsaw puzzles. I even purchased a Tupperware food divider to place the pieces in according to color and shape. At times, it would take me hours to separate the pieces.

Back around 1980, I purchased a Rubick’s Cube. About a month 2000px-Rubik's_cube.svglater, that darn puzzle cube almost caused marital problems, changed my eating habits, and my sleeping schedule. I found it difficult to put down. In the evening watching television, I was going to put it down just after the news. Then I was going to put it down just after the Late Show. Time was lost thereafter until the dog wanted out. The sun was rising.

So, I decided to put the puzzle box down after the news. That worked. However, I found myself taking it into the bathroom with me, having it while on the telephone, and even on the kitchen counter as I watched the food I was cooking. ENOUGH!

rubiks-cube_2630857kI remember it well. It was Friday night. The public broadcasting station showed old Tarzan movies on Friday nights and my family watched them together. The family on that night included Rubick’s cube. And, I solved it. My husband was very proud of me – actually relieved I presume, because we had not gone to bed at the same time for a month. But, our son, being mischievous, turned the layers mixing them again. He thought it was funny. It took me two days to solve the puzzle again. Twice after that, I would mix the layers again to solve again. After the second time, I became bored. My husband didn’t.

We were in the mall and a store had a sign about a discount to anyone who could solve Rubick’s cube in less than 3 minutes. Personally, I didn’t see anything in that store that I wanted to buy, and I wasn’t sure that I remembered how to solve the puzzle. But, my husband insisted that I solve the cube just to show off. So, I did – in less than 2 minutes. He bought a cassette tape recorded by some unknown artist.

All of that came back to me about a week ago when my son, now a mischievous adult, dug the solved puzzle cube out of a box, brought it into my office, turned the various layers, and then laughed when putting it in front of me. He said that I needed to have some fun. I placed that darn cube, unsolved, on a bookshelf behind me.

My new friends however, are learning how much I like puzzles. They became aware when hearing game sound effects in the background during our phone calls.   Bubbles is a free, online, match three game with sound effects. It’s a game that doesn’t require much concentration and if you lose, you just play again. It gives my hands something to do while on the phone.

I promise – no puzzles or games otherwise for the next several days. Our current news, trying to figure out how the thoughts of people work, are puzzle enough.

Now, to start open discussion, here’s a video that you might find interesting and want to discuss.  There are other subjects in the news that I’ll post in the comment section, and invite you to do the same.

  1. simple common sense……this officer claims he feared for his life from the driver…..YET he re holstered his weapon and then grabbed the guy in a choke hold……a person that is really in fear from a person and has a gun in his hand does NOT put the gun away and then fight the guy.

  7. Love the story !! My wife bought me a Cube in 79 or 80 and for some reason, I was addicted to it as well. It took a few days or so to solve it, then I’d scramble it up and try to see how fast I could solve it. Once you memorize the pattern it would take about 3 minutes.

    My wife…………still hasn’t solved it……..(hehehehehehe !!!)

My favorite Tarzan memory was when Tarzan was messing with Nazi’s and he’s taunting one.

    Then Cheetah takes his turn

Uhmmmmmmmm, if this cop said he was bitten, and didn’t document it, nor get medical attention, then I’d screw with that cop and claim I had some incurable disease.

Then Melendez has a record of planting evidence, Mr. Dent has no criminal record and a very stable work history, and he did get blood tests and he had no drugs in his system.

Folks……………thank God Almighty Fogen was bounced from the police academy !!!!!

If I was on a jury in this case I’d be awarding at least 5 million to Mr. Dent. Melendez has to go to jail………don’t collect $200.00, no free pass………….hard time.

“Honolulu woman undergoes bionic eye surgery to restore vision”

    http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/28617348/historic-bionic-eye-surgery-restores-womans-sight

    Excerpt:

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 72-year-old Honolulu woman underwent a historic procedure Tuesday when surgeons partially restored her vision.

After being blind for two years, the woman underwent a four hour long bionic eye surgery at the Hawaii Eye Surgery Center of Hawaii.

The bionic eye works only for patients who have the hereditary disease, retinitis pigmentosa, which causes severe vision impairment, but bionic eye implant inventor Dr. Mark Humayan hopes the device will evolve to assist more patients.

……The patient will have to wear a special type of glasses that works as a camera and will process images to the device implanted in the patient’s eye. The device will work as a processor so that the images the user “sees” will transfer from the retina, through the optic nerve and to the brain.

Currently, the patient will see only shades of grey, but studies suggest there’s a possibility of seeing up to nine colors.

A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper of 20 years, Guido, has cheated him out of $10 million. Guido is deaf which is why he got the job in the first place.

The Godfather assumed that since Guido could not hear anything, he could never testify in court. When the Godfather goes to confront Guido about his missing $10 million,
he takes along his personal lawyer because he knows sign language.

The Godfather tells the lawyer, “Ask him where the money is!”
The lawyer, using sign language, asks Guido, “Where’s the money?”
Guido signs back, “I don’t know what you are talking about.”

The lawyer tells the Godfather, “He says he doesn’t know what you are talking about.”
The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to Guido’s head and says, “Ask him again or I’ll kill him!”

The lawyer signs to Guido, “He’ll kill you if you don’t tell him.”

Guido trembles and signs back, “OK! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed at my cousin Bruno’s house.”

The Godfather asks the lawyer, “What did he say?”

The lawyer replies, “He says you don’t have the balls to pull the trigger.”

    • Are they serious ????? When I was in HS we had a few kids who went out for football as seniors, more than anything, because we’d kicked everyone’s butt’s for 3 years to that point, and they wanted to contribute. They really couldn’t play, but were good kids, and they were OUR kids.

They were not eligible to earn a varsity letter, but most of us who’d played for 4 years asked the coaches to give them letters and championship jackets. To earn a varsity letter you had to start at least one game on offense or defense, special teams didn’t count, or play in at least X number of quarters. Our thinking was that they made every practice and what little they did play, it gave the starters a breather.

If they stuck it out staring with 3 a days in 100 degree Aug / Sept heat and survived our coaches practices, that earned their letters and jackets. None of them had mental or physical issue, but hell, it’s the same thing.

There are probably thousands of cases like this and the one kid gets support, not grief. There is nothing like seeing a disadvantaged kid succeed at something. When my son played Little League, and I coached every team he was on, we’d always have that “one” kid. All of us coaches made the effort to coach them as hard as the stars. Yeah, they batted at the bottom of the order and we couldn’t put them on the infield (they are a danger to themselves) but when we had a blowout going, we’d put one of them at 1st for a late inning and that’s what it’s all about. The parents who knew what was up couldn’t thank us enough for letting them play an important position.

What the hell is wrong with these people…………!!

Another example of white privilege seen in the St. Louis area? We have a major problem with crime in this country that no one seems to want to address. When will we reach the point that we as fellow members of society are willing to accept responsibility for our actions and stop blaming others for things that we willingly choose to do? If there is one thing that can be said to be color blind, that is criminal acts, and a criminal is a criminal no matter what the color of his/her skin is..

I have not seen any mention on here about the police officer in Boston who was shot in the face by a criminal, nor has there been any mention of the several other examples of police being shot during the last week or so. Are the lives of police officers so less valuable than other people that their deaths should simply be ignored as if they never lived?

Are you projecting? Care to flesh out that question as it is applies to your comment?

We have a major problem with crime in this country that no one seems to want to address.

I think the word “country” is important in your statement. Crime and experience with crime actually comes on the community level. I can “share” about crime happening elsewhere, but cannot “address” crime on a national level based on any information other than that which is reported in the media. That would require that anyone wanting to “address” crime on a factual basis, and national level spend lots, and lots of time and may not be able to present an overall picture for years.

When will we reach the point that we as fellow members of society are willing to accept responsibility for our actions and stop blaming others for things that we willingly choose to do?

And you’re speaking of whom? George Zimmerman? Others?

      True. I totally agree.

There was more than a mention about the Boston officer. In fact, Yahtzee embedded the video of his funeral. Sorry. I understand that the Boston shooting happened today. I presumed you were talking about the officer in NY. Since we’re on this subject Mothman, you are welcomed to post anything on this blog of interest to you. Don’t wait on myself or anyone else to do so. As you can see from the post, there are things that happen in real life that prevents me from writing. IIRC, the last that I posted regarding police officers harmed was about the man arrested for shooting the two officers in Ferguson. Where are you on that thread?

In other words, just as I cannot keep up with all the news and write a blog on it 24/7, you cannot keep up with all the articles and comments here, either.

    • do you know of any cases when an officer or white person got shot and the shooter is known and happens to be black but the DA refused to bring charges? or took it to an GJ and they returned a NO true bill? i ask because the outrage is over a group getting away with these crimes even when caught on video in the act such as Tamir Rice.

      Like

      • Actually that’s a really good question.
I remember a black officer was shot 4times by a white guy when they served a warrant on a wrong house & the DA didn’t charge the white civilian for shooting the black officer (I believe sergeant)

Xena posted about a black officer who tazed & killed 95yr vet in a nursing home & they at least charged him but they took a bench trial & judge acquitted him.

I remember a white officer choked but didn’t kill a white teenage son of a prominent lawyer & was at least fired.

but I cant think of a single instance of a black man; cop or civilian, who killed a white man but wasn’t at least fired or charged.
but I’m sure there’s several black cops out there who killed a white suspect & wasn’t disciplined/charged. I just don’t think we’ll see many cases of black cops caught on video who’ve *clearly murdered a white kid* like we’ve seen white cops who’ve clearly murdered a black kid, much less see black cops receive the massive media support and protections their fellow white ones enjoy.

and we are addressing the ‘major crimes’ but mostly focused on the ones who don’t get punished. the ones committed by state officials who aren’t being held accountable. so I agree, when will these ppl be held responsible, because most criminals, no matter what color, rarely hold themselves responsible! suppose that’s the nature of criminals & why we want to employ police & prosecutors & judges etc with integrity.

but what about the police & prosecutors who aren’t held accountable even when their crimes are made public? so when will these racists systems & racist apologists start looking inward &/or bother to educate themselves on the issues instead of blaming the ppl who unlike some others, have not had the luxury of 400yrs sitting on their high horse blaming the victims?

“Video shows judge’s outburst in Seminole County courtroom”

(“After the exchange, Schott decided to reverse the jury’s verdict to not guilty.” )

    • Yahtzee, they are not supposed to, but it appears that the arresting officer admitting to making a “mistake” that the judge considered perjury, and the prosecutor did not want to proceed against the officer for lying. The State can appeal. What surprises me more is why a jury would convict the woman since there was no evidence that she was driving while intoxicated?

The article paints Judge Schott in a bad light because of his “outburst,” but I’ve seen worst. I saw a judge stand up, lean over, and shout at an attorney where his spit landed on the attorney’s face.

Oh, wow and an lol….a judge’s spit on an attorney’s face. I can resist the pun: That was one heck of a “spat”

        • Yahtzee, the attorney had asked for a schedule change because the other side had failed to provide requested discovery. The judge would not reschedule the next hearing, so the attorney said that he was jeopardizing his ability to bring forth his case. With that, the judge stood up, leaned all the way over the bench, and shouted so loud that bailiffs who were in another room came running. That judge has now retired. 🙂

Xena, so far so good, I just finished my first month and will follow up with the Dr. next Monday. All my labs are good, and I am losing weight like crazy, but needed. Last week alone lost 21lbs which really concerned me, but the nurse talked to the Dr and he said it was due to the chemo and loss of appetite. Well really it’s not a loss of appetite it’s a loss of taste. So I eat very small portions, just a couple of bites here and there, and drink ensure. Other than that, sleep does not come easy for me, so I got some meds for that, and was able last night 3 straight hours and was able to go back to sleep. The nurse giving me chemo this week overheard me talking about sleep and said the problem is before the chemo they give me steroids, and that is why I am having problems sleeping. Other than that, no side effects such as nasea, ect.

It is amazing when we awaken (or circumstances awaken) the latent strength/power within our spirit/soul.

Thanks Xena and yahtzeebutterfly. In regards to the music I posted, yes it is very powerful, and music and writing poetry I love. If I could go back in time, I would have loved to place more music in my life. I have been told I have a beautiful voice. I just love the saying from August Rush, “The music is all around us, all we have to do is listen.” If you haven’t seen the movie, it’s a must, the ending touches my soul, and you will need tissues.

            I love that saying, Butterflydreamer!

I remember singing a song as a child with the line “In my heart there rings a melody, of perfect harmony, of love.”

And, I love when “Music” sings “I write the songs” and

My home lies deep within you,
And I’ve got my own place in your soul.
Now, when I look out through your eyes,
I’m young again, even though I’m very old.

    • Hey Eurobrat! Addiction is right! LOL! I had not heard of the Candy Crush. I do know that many of the court TV programs have couples on where one is addicted to video games. I suppose the ability to win the modern day Video games is unlike Atari. 🙂

      • I have so far abstained from playing Candy Crush, but I know a lot of people who are addicted to it. I do think Rubik’s Cube is more intellectually challenging than most video games, so I think you picked the better obsession 🙂
