Astronaut Lives Matter

Did the title get your attention?

This post is about the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker; astronauts, postal carriers, dog trainers, window washers, construction workers, truck drivers, assembly line workers, bankers, insurance adjusters and all other careers. It asks, are jobs the same as lives?

“Black lives matter” is a response to inequalities. In fact, it’s a response to historical inequalities. Black Lives Matter is an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise.

police lives matterThere is opposition that responds, “Police lives matter.” When the opposition responds by using a career choice, it resounds with hypocrisy, double-standards, and ignorance. All lives matter and human life should not be valued by job titles.

Children are asked what they want to be when they grow up. That is the ability to exercise choices, but even then, some children are told that they cannot become what they aspire. For centuries, girls were told they could not be physicians, lawyers, truck drivers, astronauts, etc. Black children were told they could not become any of the above, and add President of the United States to that list.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t remember being asked what I wanted to look like, what color I wanted for my skin, hair, eyes; how tall I wanted to be; what nation I wanted to be born in.

Being a police officer is a choice. At any time, the uniform can come off. However, people cannot take off their skin. Demanding accountability and a checks-and-balance for officer-involved shootings is not cop-hate.

Never before have we seen where activism for victims and advocating for equality and equal justice resulted in a profession retorting by saying that their career choice makes their lives more worthy than the lives of others. What is really sad is that those promoting “police lives matters” don’t know the difference between a career choice and having no choice on how one is born.

Very good point. And may I add, no one said police lives don’t matter. With any career choice you make, you have job duties and responsibility, and are paid for that. If you make a bad decision you may be terminated in all professions, which include jobs that are considered more dangerous than a police officer. If you do not like the risk associated with being and officer, find a new career. Being a police officer does not place you above the law.

The history of policing in America was not to protect the public from crime. It was to give businesses control of disgruntled workers who complained of unsafe working conditions. It was to protect property. Then came Prohibition and police departments in urban cities became known for corruption. Then a time came when some folks who grew up in poor immigrant neighborhoods wanted to help prevent crime. In doing so, they were able to help some of their former classmates and neighbors stay out of jail. This effectively took jurisdiction from elected sheriffs to communicate with and resolve personal conflicts and placed the appointment and hiring of police officers in the hands of politicians.

Now, I have no clue what motivates people to want to be police officers. Personally, if I was offered a job working with people I don’t know and wouldn’t care to know, in communities where I would not live, and had to carry a gun to do so, I would not want the job. IMHO, it has nothing with being a “hero.” The true hero cops are those in countries, such as the UK, who serve and protect without carrying guns.

I, too, agree with you, butterflydreamer2. And, I want to emphasize your point that “no one said police lives don’t matter”

I want our nation’s police officers to be SAFE.

We are fortunate that we have courageous LE people who DO serve and protect our communities. I just wish that their courage extended to being brave enough to be WHISTLEBLOWERS against the bad cops. There should NOT be an atmosphere in police departments of SUCH LOYALTY to fellow officers that they support the few bad, criminal cops. BAD cops need to be turned in by their fellow officers. LE personnel managers need to investigate the bad cops and work with prosecutors to see that they are charged.

Xena, you make good points in your article, especially pointing out the meaning behind “Black Lives Matter” :

“Black Lives Matter” is a response to inequalities.

It is a campaign for EQUAL justice, for an END to unjust profiling by LE of innocent people, for EQUAL, fair treatment by LE, and for ACKNOWLEDGEMENT by society that Blacks possess the SAME civil rights as every American citizen.

Until the killing of Black men, Black mothers’ sons
      Is as IMPORTANT
As the killing of White men, White mothers’ sons,
We who believe in freedom cannot rest.
We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes.

  9. The reality is that all lives matter. The reality is that racists and many cops, BY THEIR ACTIONS, show they don’t care about certain types of people. In fact, those same actions prove they are bound and determined to eliminate those they have a hatred of.

This bs with police turning peaceful demonstrations into full scale warfare clearly shows where they stand. They, along with the racists, then have the unmitigated gall to turn around and start the ” XXXXXXX Lives Matter”

Did I miss the memo that states “XXXXXXX Lives Don’t Matter…….kick their asses”

Time and time again we read / hear / see that a cop, always white, shoots a black or other minority for literally no reason. Time and time again the old “reaching for his waistband,” was rushing me, had a gun, but none is found, crap piled onto the cop screaming “stop resisting” all the while the guy is cuffed and the Storm Troopers are stomping or tasering they guy.

What if a group of men did the same thing to a cop ?? What makes the badge impervious to prosecution ?

Racism……there is no other reason. Even black cops are afraid of white cops when they are out of uniform…….hows that for job security !!!

The arbitrator reinstated Najor with the belief that the department did not have just cause to fire the 10-year police force veteran because she violated no terms or conditions of her contract, attorney Peter Sudnick told Macomb Daily.

So, there we have it. If their contract doesn’t say that they can be fired for violating a citizen’s civil rights, or committing assault, or destroying the personal property of others, then they cannot be fired. And, that decision comes from an arbitrator who is not a court of law.

We have a similar situation in Rockford with Oda Poole, the officer with a reputation for killing 4 unarmed Black men, the last one being Mark Anthony Barmore, who Poole and his partner Stan North shot in the back 3 times in the day care center of a church in the presence of children and staff. The city filed a petition with the Court to overturn the arbitrator’s ruling. Just last month, Judge Doherty, (who did not like the arbitrator’s decision), denied Poole back pay and ordered him placed on paid administrative leave.

if i’m not mistaken as a police officer, Roorda was caught lying on official police reports, repeatedly.
jeopardizing ppl’s freedom, as a sworn officer. but wasn’t fired until he took revenge on his boss and secretly recorded his boss doing something.

so basically he got fired when he pissed off higher up cops, fux violating the rights of citizens he swore to protect, he fuxed with other cops.

Just want to share the lyrics that I have been singing within me today:

Reach out and touch somebody’s hand
Make this world a better place, if you can
Reach out and touch somebody’s hand
Make this world a better place, if you can

Just try, take a little time out of your busy day
To give encouragement to someone who’s lost the way
Just try, or would I be talking to a stone, if I asked you
To share a problem that’s not your own, oh, no
We can change things, if we start giving

Why don’t you, reach out and touch somebody’s hand
Make this world a better place, if you can
Reach out and touch somebody’s hand
Make this world a better place, if you can

Just try, if you see an old friend on the street
And he’s down, remember his shoes could fit your feet
Just try, try a little kindness you’ll see
It’s something that comes very naturally, oh, yeah
We can change things, if we start giving

    Why don’t you
Reach out and touch somebody’s hand

Reach out and touch somebody’s hand
Make this world a better place, if you can
Reach out and touch somebody’s hand
Make this world a better place, if you can

I know that you and I have talked about it, and considered that maybe you told someone who might have told someone and only God knows where such a trail would end and that is why supabutterfly came with an opinion. Then too, I considered that others complained about the consistent going off topic with embedded tweets that disrupted discussion, so maybe it was an observation and no breaking of confidentiality on your part.

There were at least two others who posted comments here for the first time on this thread. You didn’t bother to greet them. That is what originally caught my attention.

After I approved supabutterfly’s comment, I didn’t get a chance to welcome him/her before you responded. Now I understand why you took it upon yourself to greet supabutterfly but not others. You took his/her comment personally.

I would suggest that you not jump to conclusions. I did not read supabutterfly’s comment to mean that jabs were made at you or anyone else for posting videos, lyrics, and news links. Let’s include tweets to that list. The impression that I got is based on what others have stated about this blog; that is, that they appreciate original written articles, and comments where we talk with each other. There are blogs where the comments are not nested for participates to reply to the comments of others, and also blogs that look like news feeds on numerous subjects on the same page. Good Morning, Supabutterfly. I just saw what you wrote here. I think we need to clear the air.

Despite your first coming here with what I considered a micro-aggression right after I posted lyrics to a song (plus I am known for posting news links without comment AND videos) with your words:

“I know that it’s easy to post other peoples articles, video’s and songs, I will however, strive to post original responses.”

I, nevertheless, ignored your jab and graciously welcomed you with these words:

            “Welcome supabutterfly 🙂
Looking forward to your original responses. Sounds as if you will add a lot to discussions here.”

Yet, when I posted a news link with no comment, you immediately continued without stating your opinion asking me for my thoughts on the article without stating your own. I saw that as your way of pointing out that I had taken an “easy” way to post.

Nevertheless, I continued to be gracious to you and wrote:

Oh, supabutterfly….here is your chance to share YOUR “original response.” I would love to hear your thoughts 🙂

I now realize that capitalizing the word “YOUR” and putting your original intent of using fresh replies in quotes (“original response”) may have not been a good idea.

Even when Xena asked if there was a problem, I did not want to put you, supabutterfly, on the spot, and so I bit my lip and offered you grace again by writing

Just wanted supabutterfly, being new, to know that I welcome his/her presence and to feel comfortable to share his/her opinion.

I, at the time, did not want to just come out and say to Xena what I was feeling about your original jab at me and those who post videos, lyrics, and simple news links. I wanted to keep the peace and offer you a chance to state your opinion about the police chief in the article I linked.

You say now that you wanted to stir a discussion, and yet when butterflydreamer stated her opinion and response to this article, you had no interest in discussing it with her. That confuses me.

They want an apology from the mayor.
Why don’t they as the “finest” apologize to the mayor and the city?
Disgusting, they not only were disrespectful to the mayor, but to the officer
and their family and to the state of New York.
If they want to blame someone look at themselves and their brothers.
Look at Darren Wilson and all of the officers that get by with murder.
They can do no wrong in their eyes and they never have to pay for their crimes.
People are fed up with them.

Asked the officer, WHY they thought the mayor should apologize and he said that he had a talk with his son. OK, then the officer just admitted he also had a talk with his son. He admitted it openly but said it should have been in private with the mayor and his son.
The mayor’s son is black, while this officer’s son isn’t.
I never had to have that conversation with my kids because they were white.
Wanda Sykes said it best in her stand up.
Her Mom told them to act white.
The police brutality, murder and racism has to go.
Just sick of it all and like I said the officers were killed, not because of the mayor, but because they keep standing up for the officers that kill and get by with it.
They “KNOW” they will get by with it.
    So, no regrets.
A respectable officer always has regrets for taking someone’s life.

They had better wake up and realize that demonstrators today are a new generation. Most are children and grandchildren of those who lived through the 1960’s, protested, went to sing-in’s, sit-in’s, marched and were roughed up by police for being “hippies” and “yippies.”

The 1960’s mainly focused on certain cities in southern states. What is happening now is national. It’s a shut-it-down protest, and the demonstrators are far from being tired. The demonstrators in Ferguson showed the world that tear gas and rubber bullets are not going to stop them. There is more fear in living day-to-day with the thought that a person with a badge and gun can kill them in cold blood, caught on camera, and still walk free.

They protect each other only when it’s good for them, but damn, what do we do without those like Serpico?
I’m sure there are a lot of good ones that are just disgusted with the crap these others pull.

          • I have it, but haven’t had a chance to watch.
Now, after the holidays, I can just sit back, chill, get me some popcorn and enjoy it.
            I know that I will. : )

    • Hey Lolypop! I’ve come to like using the background function. There are many good ones, so I’ll probably change them from time to time, with special ones for holidays. Glad you like them.
