We Hold These Truths To Be Self-Evident 
We know now that people who have ebola caught in its early stage CAN be saved. It is tragic that Eric Duncan lost his life to ebola. So very sad.
May he rest in peace.

The hospital was very negligent in their treatment of Duncan. I hope that the situation put other hospitals on notice to take patients seriously.

I smelled a DUMP the minute I heard about Mr. Duncan’s case. A patient dump, that is.
“Patient dumping” occurs when a hospital denies or limits emergency services to a patient for non-medical reasons – typically economic or discriminatory reasons. Back in the day, private hospitals would “dump” patients they didn’t want onto public hospitals by transferring the patients, regardless of the urgency of their illness or childbirth status. Public hospitals have mostly disappeared in recent decades and patient dumping has been illegal since 1986 (Google “EMTALA”), but it continues in more modern forms – often by premature discharges from the ER.
I speak with some authority on this, because I investigated EMTALA/dumping allegations for several years. So when I heard that Duncan was visiting from Africa, alarms sounded immediately in my mind:
“DING, DING, DING! I bet he had no insurance coverage – a classic red flag for patient dumping suspicions!”

Annie, I remember the news reporting that Duncan had no health insurance, so your guess on that is absolutely correct. Oh yes — it was patient dumping. Evidently, staff was so complacent that they didn’t tell the attending physician that Duncan had just returned from West Africa, and they didn’t see a need to protect themselves, resulting in 2 attending nurses being infected.
