Michael Brown’s Autopsy Report – Shot Six Times

The New York Times just reported the results of Michael Brown’s autopsy. Michael Brown is the 18-year old shot dead by Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson on August 9, 2014.Michael Brown's autopsy

The report is based on the preliminary private autopsy performed today, August 17, 2014. Michael was shot at least six times, including twice in the head.

Dr. Michael M. Baden, former chief medical examiner for the City of New York, flew to Missouri today at the family’s request to conduct the separate autopsy. Dr. Baden found that one of the bullets entered the top of Michael’s skull, suggesting that his head was bent forward when it struck him and caused the fatal injury. Michael was also shot four times in the right arm. It does not appear that the shots were from a close range because no gunpowder was present on Michael’s body. Dr. Baden does not have access to the clothing that Michael wore when he was killed. In addition to the autopsy performed by Dr. Baden and local officials in Missouri, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said Sunday that the Justice Department would conduct its own autopsy, because of “the extraordinary circumstances involved in this case and at the request of the Brown family.”

Only three bullets were recovered from Michael’s body, and Dr. Baden can clarify the autopsy results after seeing the X-rays for where the bullets were found. Some of the bullets entered and exited several times, including one that left at least five different wounds.

Dr. Baden stated that the police should be examining the automobile to see if there is gunshot residue in the police car.

UPDATE:

The video of the complete press conference with Dr. Baden is below.

    Horrific!

Now picture Michael with his hands up and over his head and consider how the bullet holes are located in relation to each other.

    • Dr. Baden said that the shot to the top of the head could also mean that Michael was rushing forward. However, he also thinks it was the last shot. That would mean that the shot to the eye would have prevented him from running forward. Falling forward, yes. Running forward, no.

      Like

      • I don’t believe that he rushed the officer either, after the eye shot he could have started to fall and lowered his head with the final shot after.

So he faced him the whole time, smh, while pumping 6 shots into this young man. What has happened to humanity?

I anxiously await other evidence from the investigation because an eye witness said that one bullet went into a nearby apartment.

    • Hey Ladylove. Welcome to Blackbutterfly7 and thanks for the comment. MSNBC just reported that Mike was shot in his inner-right palm, indicating that his hand was up. The commentator is saying that should be enough to arrest Darren Wilson.

She also made another good comment, which is that without an arrest, more is going to happen and more reports will be released that can possibly taint the jury pool.

Law enforcement in Ferguson, MO has given a negative impression to ALL OF THE WORLD. They knew that their reputation with that community was not good, or they would not have brought out the dogs when people gathered as Mike’s body laid in the street.

      • With his hands up, even if bent at elbows, it is obvious from the pattern that the officer was going for kill shots…..chest/head. There is no justification for that when the person is unarmed. So what if the man had a swollen side of his face, would like to see photos of his injuries, why couldn’t he have used a taser? Called for backup and followed?

Absolutely. Cops have alternatives. If it’s true that Darren was attacked while in his car, and Mike ran, Darren had the alternative to step on the gas and call for backup. He had already wounded Mike so it wasn’t like Mike was going to catch a plane and leave Missouri.

The same love that brings children and grandchildren into this world, has to be the same love that conquers hate. I know that doesn’t mean much given that unarmed persons are being killed by deputized law enforcement, but it is all that we have to start a healing process. It is also something to keep in mind when voting.

We need State’s attorneys and District Attorneys to take a firm stand that anytime a cop kills an unarmed person, that cop will be relieved of duty and there will be an immediate investigation conducted by an impartial special investigator.

We must start writing those campaigning for election and asking them that if elected, will they represent unarmed victims who are killed by deputized law enforcement just like they represent other victims of murder? Send the letter to editors of local newspapers and talk radio. Be prepared to be interviewed and support why the question was asked. Attend their campaign meetings and ask the question.

If none of the candidates answer the question appropriately, write-in Mickey Mouse on the ballot when we vote.

      I agree, Mindy!

All of this unrest has been caused by the Ferguson Police chief effort to “protect his own” and NOT protecting and serving the community.

He has led a police force that has no respect for the Black community.

The Governor also has no understanding (or is willingly ignorant) of the feelings of the community and its distrust of the PD.

John Oliver addressed this superbly in a show this week, an excerpt of which I have just transcribed (I can embed the whole 15 minutes if asked):

      John Oliver – – –

All of which brings us back to this week and Ferguson.

So how do you improve things there? Well, you could demilitarize the police force to stop things looking like this (4 militarized police aiming their guns at a calm protestor with hands up.) But that would just change the optics.

The substance of the problem would still be there as was embodied by a police officer on the streets of Ferguson this week who was dressed entirely normally. (Oliver plays video of police officer saying,
“Bring it! All you fucking animals. Bring it, I don’t give a fuck.”)

That kind of statement betrays an inability to see the citizens of Ferguson as individuals and instead treat them as a threatening whole.

And, that is a top down problem. Because last night this is how the Governor of Missouri decided how to rebuild trust between the police and the community – – –

Video of Gov. saying, “I signed an order declaring a state of emergency and ordering implementation of a curfew in the impacted area of Ferguson.”

      Back to Oliver:

Oh, perfect. So you took a community tired of being treated as criminals and imprisoned them all in their own houses for a night. And, in doing so, employed the tone of a pissed off vice-principal trying to restore order at assembly.

Video of Gov: “If we’re going to achieve justice, we must first have and maintain peace. This is a test.
The eyes of the world are watching.”

      Back to Oliver:

That is profoundly patronizing. Look let’s see if you all can remain quiet for 20 minutes and then we’ll see if you all can go and play outside.

If even the Governor can’t distinguish between the good and the bad elements of the community and decided to punish everyone equally then that should go both ways. I know the police love their ridiculous, unnecessary military equipment.

      So, here’s another patronizing test:

Let’s take it all away from them and if they can make it through a whole month without killing a single unarmed Black man, then and only then can they get their fucking toys back.

  11. I have a different theory as to why Michael was shot in the head. Several witnesses state that Michael had his hands up and was surrendering.

It is likely that his hands were up and he was beginning to kneel down, with his head looking at the ground. I believe he was beginning to lay flat on the ground, on his stomach, with his hands above head, which is usually what a person does when surrendering.

I am not a violent person, but these creeper tweepers who insist that the head shots PROVE that Michael was charging the police officer makes me want to punch them.

Welcome to Blackbutterfly7 and thanks for your comment. I know what you mean about the creeper tweepers.

Those promoting the theory that the shot to the top of Mike’s head proves that he was charging Wilson forget one thing — Mike had been shot in the eye. That tells me that Mike would have been prevented from deliberately doing anything physical, such as charging head-on towards a person. Even IF the shot to the eye came after the shot to the top of the head, it was “excessive force” because the shot to the top of the head was fatal.

This confirms witnesses who said his body jerked and he was shot from behind. It is in an area where it might have happened either way. On their chart they also show where the wound is from the back side and it can be described as being on the inner side of the arm which could have been received either way.

    • Towerflower,
Thanks for the reports. I’m just getting online. About the Ferguson Market, his lawyer has stated that he did not call the police neither wanted to press charges because he thought it was “petty.” A customer in the store called 911. Without the store wanting to charge, the Ferguson police had no good-faith reason to obtain the surveillance tape unless they intended to bring it before a grand jury to seek an indictment. The fact that they did not seek to obtain the surveillance tape until almost six days after Michael’s death means they were not doing it to bring the matter before a grand jury to indict on charges for “strong armed robbery.”

Another thing; since the store’s owner did not want to press charges, the cops made-up the almost $50 value of the merchandise that was shoplifted. There is dishonesty on the side of the Ferguson police department. Their credibility is ruined.

All excellent questions. I also want to know more about the bullet that entered a nearby apartment.

Just throwing out something because I’m not a shooter or ballistic expert, but my son has experience that he obtained in the military. He told me that since LE is trained to shoot center mass, and if a bullet truly went into a nearby apartment, then it means Wilson was the one moving while shooting.

He mentioned something else too regarding the hearsay of hearsay on Wilson’s behalf, which is, with Mike’s body being 35 ft from the police car, and Wilson saying that Mike was charging at him, that Mike would have needed to have ran further than 35 ft. He asked if there is a timeline and approximation for the time that Mike ran, to the time he was killed.

It reminded me of how others tore up ZImmerman’s story by using timelines and distance. I’ll leave that up to those who know more about it, but that would be interesting to know to see if it’s possible for Mike to have ran beyond 35 ft in order to run back towards Wilson.

Hello again. I have been reading and listening to Darryl Parks. He stated the shot to the top of Michael’s head went from the top to the front. Unless I am misunderstanding, how, if Michael had his head down ‘bum rushing’ or his head down looking at the ground while kneeling could this trajectory happen? Top to the front toward his face? Wouldn’t that suggest a shot from above and behind while Michael was in a prone position? Of course, at this point there are no official trajectory reports. Anyone else hear Darryl Parks say this on Nancy Grace?

    • sidewinder,
There were two shots to Michael’s head. The one in the top of his head did not come out. It was the other shot that was at an angle. I think what they’re trying to figure out (an waiting on x-rays to confirm) is if that was the bullet that came out of Michael’s eye, or if it was the shot above his eye that exited, re-entered into his eye, and came out at his chin then re-entered in his collar-bone.

Thanks. I understood Parks to say the shot to the top of the head was at an angle toward his face. Although he did not say it, I assumed it did not come out. The second shot to the forehead came out through his eye and re-entered in other places. Which is a strange trajectory/path for a bullet. But as you say, they need the xrays.

        • sidewinder,
You’re correct that the shot to apex, the center of Mike’s head, did not exit. There was another shot to Mike’s head. That is the one where more examination is necessary along with the shot above his right eye because there are exit and re-entry wounds.

I would love to see the opinion of an expert to address why all the shots were on Mike’s right-side if he was purportedly coming at Wilson. IMHO, it appears that Mike was turning around to face Wilson with his hands up as he was being shot. That might explain why one bullet went into Mike’s arm and re-entered his chest and as Mike completed the turn, Wilson made kill shots to Mike’s head.

Have to reply here Xena. Nothing in this area to call in reserves I heard of or was resported. Saw Staties the last few days out and about. The trucks I saw looked to be supply and were tan. Came from one of the State Police directions as I headed to a Walmart down a Highway North between 3 major cities in my area.

    Ending blog settings talk…
I had to tune out tonight while the protests ended well in Ferguson. I saw an effort with Police and the community taking on the disgruntled who wanted to step over the line just for throwing a bottle. We need and I am proud to see this is not the non violent protests we want in Justice. It is time, as the legal going ons happen and Micheal´s family lays him to rest soon to allow this process we all as American´s sadly await. Again.
Ferguson is a good community as we so gracefully saw plenty of good examples since Michael´s killing. I tended to watch the community gather to give each other shelter, food, goods, and prayers. They cried, danced, and laughed briefly. Then cried again. They, and We will get there again as they have shown us. We should.

In the meantime, there is work to do. I do not think anyone will ever, even if they try will forget Michael Brown Jr. Now comes the process. One we know well. Sadly. The World knows Michael and everyone before him.

Michael may have been no angel, but Darren Wilson sure in hell is no god.

Peace and saftey tonight my friends.

That is a very powerful, and on-point statement. It has been said that some people who kill play the role of judge, jury and executioner. Your statement reaches into the depth — people are not god.

  43. Xena, I’m not sure if this was mentioned already but, over on the treepers website they are claiming some guy who was recording and having a conversation in the background as proof that mike “charged officer Wilson, the guy in the background can be heard saying God bless his soul, but he’s dead.

You also hear him saying the following

Then the next thing I know he coming back toward him cus – the police had his gun drawn already on him –

Oh, the police got his gun

The police kept dumpin on him, and I’m thinking the police kept missing – he like – be like – but he kept coming toward him

Now for some reason they think this is some big ah ha moment and this aligns with the theory that Mike charged the officer, 3 witnesses already stated mike turned around, so towards him could be he was facing towards him to surrender with his hands up, not getting ready to “rush” officer wilson, plus the man in the video says “he” a bunch of times so its hard to know which he ,he is referring to at times. Mike was shot in the eye, I find it hard to believe he was getting ready to rush a man with a gun when he was already wounded! Fox news has aired this clip a few times already and to me towards him means he turned around to surrender like witnesses have stated.

Also, there is new talk about more than a dozen new eyewitnesses that are corroborating the officers account. I would really like to know who these dozen witnesses are.

    • Monica,
I watched the video and the man who took it did not see what happened as Mike was killed. I don’t entertain their conspiracy theories nor their degrading and demeaning of victims, victims’ families, and any Black person who they feel is part of the “BGI.” Their agenda is to lie and misrepresent facts.

They have no interest in cases such as Curtis Reeves who killed Chad Oulson for texting in a movie theater. They didn’t know about Kelly Thomas until we reported it here. They had little interest in the Ted Wafer case because attorney Crump was not involved. I don’t waste time listening to their White Supremacist ideologies. There is too much to write about to promote equality for all, which is something that ilk does not want.

  44. best tweet so far: “three eyewitnesses tell one story. One police chief tells three stories”

In a practical sense, it may be difficult to get a grand jury to indict Darrell Wilson on the murder one charges he needs to face. From what I can tell none of the three eyewitnesses are willing to talk to local law enforcement under any circumstances, and I do not blame them. Nor do I have much faith in US AG Holder given his failure to act in the case of Trayvon Martin despite quite a bot of posturing.

    • Willis, I’ve inquired why there has been no release of Wilson’s report. The Ferguson police department was asked to release that report but released the store video instead. A reporter who is on the ground in Ferguson has also made that inquiry and today, he reported via Twitter that Wilson did not write a report.

As far as the DOJ, I’m patient. Their investigative arm is the FBI and some of their investigations into violation of civil rights have taken 3 to 5 years.
