As she was driving home to her apartment Saturday afternoon, Desiree Harris of Ferguson, Missouri passed by her grandson who was nearing her place for a visit. As was parking her car, however, she was suddenly alarmed at what appeared to be the sound of several gunshot ringing out. She quickly ran to see what was going on, but nothing could have prepared her for what she was about to see: her 18 year-old grandson’s body lying in a pool of blood in the middle of the street. “What happened?!,” Harris demanded to know of a nearby police officer. Police have confirmed the shooting, but little else, and as if the people of Ferguson, or across the nation via social media, needed any more reason to be outraged, their response to community grief and frustration was a show of force, rather than a show of concern. Aside from minimal statements to the press, there has been no press conference, no hint of what precipitated the shooting, and perhaps most tellingly, no denial that the young man was unarmed.
The notion of black people as threats is older than America itself, but there is something new and disturbing about this current roster of names added to those etched even in our recent past. Rodney King, Amadou Diallo, Eleanor Bumpurs, Abner Louima, these incidents were all rather far removed from the era that consumed the life of Emmett Till, but still occurred during times of roiling racial tension that was palpable to all. Even the killing of Sean Bell happened in the waning days of the pre-post-racial era before Barack Obama was elected president, and our popular (white) culture declared an end to racism.
What’s different now is that in post-racial America, it has become acceptable to be “post-racial,” and still fear black people. Policing strategies have legalized racism, and the media, beginning with the killing of Trayvon Martin, has made the view of black people as de facto threats just another side of the argument, and a persuasive one for many.
You can lock up all the killers of unarmed black people, or not lock them up, and it will make no difference the next time some panicky person with a gun shoots down the next Michael Brown, or Renisha McBride, or Jonathan Ferrell, or John Crawford, or chokes out the next Eric Garner. The people who have made it their business to legitimize the view of black culture as the wellspring of criminality have blood on their hands, and will continue to have blood on their hands.

“I remember one time I took my wife to a medical appointment at an office building, usually I drop her off at the entrance and I wait in my car in the parking lot usually listening to music or talk radio. Of course they want to wait until the toxicology reports are back, cause if he was drinking or on drugs, then he’s a thug, and the officer had the right to shoot him even if he was running away. Did they test the officer? And about that struggle in the car and a shot went off, Why not say the officer fired that shot, the victim had no gun.
Since the officer is on PAID administrative leave, I’m sure the tax payers would like to know, if the officer ends up being charged, does he have to pay back that money? Not that your choosing sides, but it sounds like you are when you make the statement “Before he comes back, he will have to undergo 2 psychology evaluations before he returns to duty.” What you really meant to say is IF, right? It sounds like to me you’ve already made the determination.

Police chief says officer who shot Mike Brown has no complaints in his 6 yr. w/ PD.
Eric Garner’s killer has TWO serious complaints in his police file One is an ongoing lawsuit for wrongful arrest.The abc report I posted above backs up his death due to chokehold and it is viewable on you tube!
Plus the ABC report has two doctors saying chokeholds are illegal in every large city and even in most rural police departments.. They are highly respected MDs (one teaches criminal justice at Cornell )
I am withholding any quick judgement on Mike Brown and FBI WILL be overseeing it. I do feel it will be thoroughly investigated due to the attention but I see how mistaken various media have been in the Marissa Alexander case and I know that case very well. So I am taking a wait and see on what happened in his tragic shooting.
As to Eric Garner the SI PD is saying was not choke hold.but I believe the ME.The ME ruled HOMICIDE due to chokehold ( aggravated by his weight and asthma)but still officially ruled HOMICIDE!!. The ME has no reason to falsify his report!

Yahtzee, it is shocking. We saw upscale AA on tv saying they had been followed. One man said he was from very upscale community, had never experienced any racial prejudice but when many even conservative, former head of Republic party began recanting stories of police targeting them in their youth, he said he was in line in a 7/11, alarm mistakenly went off, police came in with guns drawn. They were aimed all at him! He said he was the only AA in line to pay.
Another who worked for the FBI in DC said he never had any problem walking to work in his suit but was stopped on weekends when he was casually dressed.
Yes, it is shocking!

Some joined the crowds of mourners and protesters who have gathered there since the shooting in protest of how Brown had died: black, unarmed and from multiple gunshots.

I watched for about and hour what was taking place in Ferguson. From what I gather, this took place after the vigil. There is a strong police presence, protesting, and looting. Approx 15 or 16 stores looted, Home depot, tire store, conv store, sporting goods store, general dollar store, phone store. A camera man filming as I saw sporting goods store looted. Window broken, a ground enters, walks out with major amounts of clothes, shoes, ext. They report the tire store was cleaned out. As police leave the stores, looters re-enter. At least 5 are arrested at sporting goods store. I have never seen anything like this before. They hauled employees out of conv store, as they loot.
Mother and a cousin release statement to stop, Peace no Violence. They state this is not how they want him remembered, they want justice served but not like this.

I feel that it is the Ferguson citizens’ civil right to gather in a rally and protest the killing of Michael Brown.

RE: Mike Brown family has hired Benjamin Crump!! And Eric Holder is over seeing the entire investigation. What happened to our angel, Trayvon ( RIP dear one) and I l believe the way the Fulton’s conducted themselves following tub’s not guilty, will prevent that injustice from ever happening again!

Sanford and Ferguson had their events unfolding differently. Trayvon’s killing by gz was witnessed by residents in a gated community.
The killing of Michael Brown, who was shot despite the fact that he unarmed with his hand up and surrendering, was witnessed by many in Ferguson, and there was an IMMEDIATE outcry and protest.
Thanks to eyewitnesses (some among them had their filming instruments confiscated by LE), the Black community KNEW that the killer-cop was in the wrong.

Mindy me you understand the frustration of the looters? Those are businesses that employ people in the area. Until insurance claims are filed and they are rebuilt! all those families will be out of a job. That is people that had nothing to do with the police shooting but will now be living off of unemployment instead of a wage. Shame on those looters.

We know that despite his belief and insistence on non-violence, he UNDERSTOOD how people with a history of being treated unfairly, can “lose it” when they witness a blatant injustice right before their eyes.
I am saddened that the message about this horrific killing of an unarmed, surrounding teen by the Ferguson police officer might get given second priority as the media reports on the looting and destruction of property in Ferguson.
Property can be replaced, workers can find other work, but Michael Brown cannot get his life back. This injustice must remain the focus.

I watched this live last night, and did not comment, trying to come to some understanding of why this was happening. It seemed to me there were 2 groups, the ones who were protesting, and then the looters. I understand the frustration, but having a hard time with the looting. As the mother and cousin said, this is not what they want their son/cousin remembered for. This is not justice.
I repect everybodys opinions here, this is a learning experience for me. Please come back, your voice needs to be heard, and although we may not agree everytime, it’s important that we listen and discuss. Peace, I luv you all.

Thanks for the explanation but you’re mistaken about something. If you take this as teaching, it’s only to give you proper information that hopefully, will make you feel better. I’m the only administrator of this blog. There are other authors, but they do not administrate.
Unless you have a blog, I can’t follow you to unfollow you. Word Press neither gives administrators ability to unfollow those who have subscribed. In other words, anyone can subscribe to a Word Press blog and they’re signed-up until they decide to unfollow.
I’m not a tit-for-tat person and have no reason to unfollow you on anything. Just because you’re no longer subscribed, you can still comment and read if you want. One thing I know — tensions and sensitivities are high now. 2dogsonly, Please don’t leave. There are times when we all may have a difference of opinion about a topic. I know my opinion about firearms is not always popular…..on more than one occasion, a poster, whose feelings may be just as passionate, may make a comment back that would seem to be an attack. I try not to perceive them as an attack but try to look at things from their perspective. I too have apologized for something I have written when it appears that I have insulted a person when the last thing I wanted was to insult or hurt another’s feelings.
What makes this blog so successful, IMO, is that we all come from different backgrounds and yet we seem to find a common ground. We may not always agree on a topic but we still stay. We have chosen to be a family here and as such there are times when a family member may say something that might hurt another or be perceived to have hurt another but it doesn’t mean that someone still isn’t family or we don’t care what they have to say.
Please rethink your decision and stay. I value your opinion and that of others.

The death of Michael Brown is yet another example of what terror the young black men of this nation face on a daily basis. While there is much innuendo about the murder and how it came about, do we have any hard factual evidence of the circumstances of his murder at this time? Do we know what brought about this police officer shooting and murdering an unarmed man, other than unsubstantiated reports? It would seem that too many are simply acting out of malice and hatred that has for so many years in the past been planted in their minds by actions that they encountered in their lives in the community. The outcry is justified and action needs to be taken. I might ask, however, does the action that needs to be taken include criminal acts, such as theft, arson and destruction of innocent peoples property? How many of you realize that the actions of a few people are feeding the racial stereotypes that so many have worked so long and hard to overcome? Tensions are running high in Ferguson, Missouri, and extend farther than some may realize, they are even affecting individuals here on this site. We as a nation and as a group have some questions to ask ourselves, the first one is simple, do we want justice for Michael Brown, or do we want revenge? At this time it would seem that revenge is the desired motivation of far too many. What will truly be accomplished by the impulsive actions that we are witnessing? Will it set back the movement for “true” equality or will it be like a cancer that destroys the host? United in a peaceful movement we can and will bring positive change in this nation, if we divide and simply try to win a battle, while we might win the battle, we surely will lose the war. This is your country, the choice is yours, and you will own that choice, make sure the choice you make is truly the one you want….

You know, I thought that our taxes went to provide protection and serve those of all races. I think we are all due a refund, as I don’t recall a box that needed to be checked asking for an additional black tax, if you requested protection other than white.

I would love being in a position where I can trust EVERY member of law enforcement. When people are entrusted in enforcing the law, they should be held accountable when they violate law under its color and claim. The only way to gain the trust of citizens is to move swiftly on members of law enforcement who commit murder and treat them the same as any other murder suspect.

About 20 minutes before the shooting, Johnson said he saw Brown walking down the street and decided to catch up with him. The two walked and talked. That’s when Johnson says they saw the police car rolling up to them.
The officer demanded that the two “get the f—k on the sidewalk,” Johnson says. “His exact words were get the f—k on the sidewalk.”
After telling the officer that they were almost at their destination, Johnson’s house, the two continued walking. But as they did, Johnson says the officer slammed his brakes and threw his truck in reverse, nearly hitting them.
Now, in line with the officer’s driver’s side door, they could see the officer’s face. They heard him say something to the effect of, “what’d you say?” At the same time, Johnson says the officer attempted to thrust his door open but the door slammed into Brown and bounced closed. Johnson says the officer, with his left hand, grabbed Brown by the neck.
“I could see the muscles in his forearm,” Johnson said. “Mike was trying to get away from being choked.”
“They’re not wrestling so much as his arm went from his throat to now clenched on his shirt,” Johnson explained of the scene between Brown and the officer. “It’s like tug of war. He’s trying to pull him in. He’s pulling away, that’s when I heard, ‘I’m gonna shoot you.’”
At that moment, Johnson says he fixed his gaze on the officer to see if he was pulling a stun gun or a real gun. That’s when he saw the muzzle of the officer’s gun.
“I seen the barrel of the gun pointed at my friend,” he said. “He had it pointed at him and said ‘I’ll shoot,’ one more time.”
A second later Johnson said he heard the first shot go off.
“I seen the fire come out of the barrell,” he said. “I could see so vividly what was going on because I was so close.”
Johnson says he was within arm’s reach of both Brown and the officer. He looked over at Brown and saw blood pooling through his shirt on the right side of the body.
“The whole time [the officer] was holding my friend until the gun went off,” Johnson noted.
Brown and Johnson took off running together. There were three cars lined up along the side of the street. Johnson says he ducked behind the first car, whose two passengers were screaming. Crouching down a bit, he watched Brown run past.
“Keep running, bro!,” he said Brown yelled. Then Brown yelled it a second time. Those would be the last words Johnson’s friend, “Big Mike,” would ever say to him.
Brown made it past the third car. Then, “blam!” the officer took his second shot, striking Brown in the back. At that point, Johnson says Brown stopped, turned with his hands up and said “I don’t have a gun, stop shooting!”
By that point, Johnson says the officer and Brown were face-to-face. The officer then fired several more shots. Johnson described watching Brown go from standing with his hands up to crumbling to the ground and curling into a fetal position.
“After seeing my friend get gunned down, my body just ran,” he said. He ran to his apartment nearby. Out of breath, shocked and afraid, Johnson says he went into the bathroom and vomited. Then he checked to make sure that he hadn’t also been shot.
Five minutes later, Johnson emerged from his apartment to see his friend Mike dead and in the middle of the street. Neighbors were gathering, some shouting, some taking pictures with their cell phones.
Freeman Bosley, Johnson’s attorney, told msnbc that the police have yet to interview Johnson. Bosley said that he offered the police an opportunity to speak with Johnson, but they declined.
“They didn’t even want to talk to him,” said Bosley, a former mayor of St. Louis. “They don’t want the facts. What they want is to justify what happened … what they are trying to do now is justify what happened instead of trying to point out the wrong. Something is wrong here and that’s what it is.”

Just listen to how Michael Brown’s mom, Leslie McSpadden, says how she was treated at the scene by police:

And shame on the police chief in his first news conference when he would not acknowledge or give the eyewitness accounts but just the account of the officer who killed Michael in an execution-style manner!
How can a community respect a police department like that? How can a community have confidence in such a PD?
No wonder the community is marching and demonstrating so steadfastly!
No wonder the community of Ferguson is so frustrated!
No wonder the community feels betrayed by the police who are supposed to serve them and protect them!

Mayor of Ferguson just spoke live to Andrea Mitchell
1.Saying : the demographics of this area are changing and the residents of this apt. complex are transients who move in and out before building a relationship with local law enforcement.” Did not know it is a citizen’s obligation to build a relationship with local cops.
2. Then when reporter asked if it was “reasonable to think a young man due to begin college on Monday would try to grab officer’s gun”? Mayor doubled down by saying he did not know this young man’s past history ( or apparently his name since he didn’t refer to him by name.
I guess Mayor hasn’t had time to call O’Mara to find out how to sully a victim’s reputation.

Rep. John Lewis just spoke saying he had not seen a scene like this since 1964 and JFK nationalized the National guard and based on that, he feels POTUS does have poser to bring them in. They did that in New Orleans when it became imperative. Remember, that Nat Guard Gen ordering the local cops to lower their guns.

Guessing you’ll know two nationally recognized journalist were arrested for “trespassing”on McDonalds, one from Wash. Post and one from AJAM. Pushed one against the wall. Refused to give the journalists their names, took them to jail and released them without any information as if maybe hoping they would just forget it happened. When the Wash Post called police chief, apparently he said Oh my god,release them.
No one from Mc Donald’s had called police to register a complaint.
As of this morning, the remaining 34 people arrested in McDonalds were waiting on bonds, processing.
Quick update, the looters were from another area , not from Ferguson.
