Caterpillars, moths, butterflies, and all creatures great and small,

butterflies_peace_sign_framed_tileIt’s not a real vacation such as leaving town and not having to cook and clean.   Some personal business is calling my name and I can also use some rest.  Don’t worry, because I’ll check in for the administrative stuff, such as checking on comments in moderation, and embedding photos when links are in comments.

Before I sign off temporarily, I want to thank our new subscribers.  I look forward to visiting their blogs in the near future.  If anyone else is interested in doing the same, check under “likes” for their gravatars and click on them.  Their blogs are listed on their profiles.

butterfly thank you 1Lately, the children gone too soon have been on my mind.  My heart continues crying out for them because no matter the law, trial, verdicts or even suicide by their killers, man does not have the power to resurrect.

Associated with this is my goal to finish reading Lisa Bloom’s book, Suspicion Nation.  Along with some other subjects, I plan on writing more about her book.  It has certainly raised the hairs on the necks of some Trayvon Martin haters.  Speaking of which, one thing about his killer that is never talked about among those happy that he took Trayvon’s life, is how he spent donations to pay off his personal debts that occurred before the evening that he killed Trayvon.

It was because of that money that George Zimmerman’s bond was revoked.  Ultimately, over the telephone from jail, he directed his now estranged wife Shellie to transfer money and pay bills.  At his first bond hearing, Shellie misrepresented her knowledge of that money while George sat in court like, (as Judge Lester described him), a “potted palm.” Shellie eventually confessed to being wrong and took a plea bargain that prevented her from doing jail time.

We’ve not heard anything about Shellie since her car accident, and I personally wish her the best.

    The Illinois House has approved a proposal to add protections for voting rights to the Illinois Constitution. IPR’S Brian Mackey has more.

    The measure is sponsored by House Speaker Michael Madigan himself. In explaining why he thinks it’s necessary, he recalled the federal Voting Rights Act, and the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision to “modify” parts of that law.

    “And that modification by the Supreme Court has apparently brought on efforts in other states to enact legislation that some of us would consider to be voter suppression,” says Madigan.

    Madigan says that includes voter ID laws. The speaker, who presides over a large Democratic majority, acknowledged he’s not aware of any Illinoisan being denied the right to vote because of his race or any other characteristic.

    “Some might say: ‘Well today in Illinois, you don’t need this. Voter suppression wouldn’t happen in Illinois.’ Well we don’t know that. We don’t know what the future holds.”

    The measure passed the House overwhelmingly, 109 to 5. If approved by the Senate, voters would have the final say on whether to change the Constitution at this fall’s election.

        Hola Xena,you welcome,I lack too a legal background to grasp the whole issue concerning the extension assignment,probably meaning isn’t over until is over, the appointee helping the federal government officially?

        I’m not a lawyer either but from what it appears it is merely an extension of time/authority in the Z case since it is not fully over with yet. Remember she said she would fight his dropping of the misconduct charges against her office. She might have needed this extension to continue it.

          I think the judge dismissed/settled the issues,AC can’t appeal her decision.
          I think are others issues that we aren’t aware.

          yeah it sounds like the issues w.the sanctions. but a girl can dream…
          although i don’t even want Trayvon’s name coming out of AC’s mouth, she doesn’t deserve to say his or his family’s name!
          she shld be indicted by the feds for conspiracy to obstruct justice for her shitty job at fake justice seeking for a murdered boy.

    Obama is the keynote speaker at a three-day civil rights summit at the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas. He’ll be joined by first lady Michelle Obama in commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and Johnson’s role in enacting it….

    The Civil Rights Act, along with the 1965 Voting Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act of 1968, “helped establish the legal foundation in fulfilling the long elusive promise of equality among all Americans,” according to the LBJ Library.

    Together, this triumvirate of laws would ban discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion or national origin.

    “Because of LBJ’s commitment to civil rights, he is a very important president to Obama,” said Bruce Buchanan, a presidential historian at the University of Texas in Austin. “The meaning to Obama is both professional and personal — hugely personal.”

    The nation’s first black president has often credited the Civil Rights and the Voting Rights acts with widening opportunities for people of color.

    “I might not be here as president had it not been for those who courageously helped to pass the Voting Rights Act,” Obama said at a press conference in Senegal, during a trip to Africa on June 27, 2013.

    Civic Milestone

    The social unrest of the 1960s, and the civil rights laws that followed represent a “milestone in the history of race relations,” Julian Zelizer, a presidential historian at Princeton University, said in a telephone interview.
    Zelizer said Obama used the power of the civil rights and voting rights laws to form an electoral coalition in the 2008 and 2012 presidential races.
    “Without the Voting Rights Act, those would not be votes that existed, because African-Americans were disenfranchised,” Zelizer said. “On both fronts, there’s a direct line connecting what happened in Johnson’s presidency and the president we now have.”
    The president also recalled the potency of Johnson’s legacy during a speech on Aug. 28 marking the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington.

    ‘America Changed’

    “America changed for you and for me, and the entire world drew strength from that example,” Obama said in remarks at the National Mall in Washington. Along with voting rights being secured, he said, educational opportunity was advanced, city halls were opened to all, “and yes, eventually the White House changed.”

    Last June, a divided U.S. Supreme Court threw out a core part of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, rolling back a landmark law that opened the polls to millions of Southern blacks.

    Obama denounced the top court’s decision, saying the Voting Rights Act has ensured that “voting is fair, especially in places where voting discrimination has been historically prevalent.”

      I love Yahtzee’s comments and ability to keep up with different topics. I have plenty friends on twitter and also have a blog that I won’t name or my real handle, but no one would ever know that from the looks of my blog because no one ever comments. I wish I had someone like Yahtzee to man my blog so I can take vacation though from the looks of my blog my mind is always on vacation even when I write LOL. You have a great blog and I admit being jealous.

    i didn’t check if someone posted this already but i just read it and it’s just shocking.
    it’s part 1 of a very long investigation into the changes to Chicago’s crime reporting practices to the FBI and why. CPD’s focus is reducing the stats of certain high crimes by re-classifying them; for example instead of calling them murders, even obvious ones, the CPD classifies them as death investigations thus changing the actual numbers in recorded murders.

      Shannon, thanks for the link. I read up to the “plunge” part. It comes as no surprise. As reported in the article about Illinois’ conceal carry law, Chicago has a reputation for “street justice” and the police do not classify those crimes as crimes. Favoritism and judging victims often dictates how the CPD proceeds or do not proceed in cases — that’s part of the reason for “street justice.”
