Relisha Rudd case: Body of murder suspect found dead of apparent suicide

by Associated Press April 1, 2014

WASHINGTON (AP) — The body of a man found dead in a park of an apparent suicide has been positively identified as that of a murder suspect who was the last person seen with a missing 8-year-old girl, police said Tuesday.

The man found dead Monday with an apparent gunshot wound was identified as Kahlil Tatum, 51, of Washington, police said. Tatum was a janitor at the city homeless shelter where Relisha Rudd had been living with her family. The search for Relisha was continuing.

Tatum’s death appears to be a suicide and the discovery of his body was a shock for police because they were…

  1. You know, I have looked at precious Relisha’s photo here three times today with such sadness that I earlier was unable to write.

This is such a heartbreaking tragedy, it is so hard to read about.

Praying for Relisha. May she be found alive.

I know. Today, I caught up with the Dupont heir’s rape case. It so devastated me that I am unable to write about it now. Then there are the earthquakes, and the anticipation that some sign of the Malaysian plane will be found that comes up empty again. Add to that everything else, and I guess the best way I can describe it is to say that I’m in quiet intercessory mode.

  4. I hope that the little girl’s family receives some closure soon. This is so sad.

But I don’t understand a lot about the case, I’m at a loss at how the family could turn the little girl over to basically a stranger and not question not hearing from her.

I’m with you — there is quite a bit I don’t understand about this case either. It’s been reported that Relisha was in a homeless shelter with her family. She had been missing for days and it was actually her school who reported her missing. The video or Relisha with the man suspected of kidnapping her was from a hotel — I think. She was walking along not appearing to be forced or anything. But we know that child abductors generally gain the child’s trust.

Sadly, after hearing that the suspect killed himself, it doesn’t give me much hope of finding Relisha alive.

From what I understand so far is this.

The family met the man while in a homeless shelter, he was the janitor. Relisha suffered from some medical issues, bad headaches being one of them. He offered to take her to a medical conference in Atlanta (I think it was Atlanta) for an evaluation by specialists. The family agreed and willingly turned her over to the man without really knowing anything about him or his past. It doesn’t sound like the family had any contact with their daughter the minute they turned her over to him—-BIG PROBLEM, and this is one of the things I don’t understand. But he gained not only the child’s trust but that of her family.

But, yes, it was her school that reported her missing which started the search for her.

  5. “Search for missing 8-year-old Relisha Rudd at Kenilworth Park could end this week”

The search for Relisha Rudd in a Northeast Washington park began to wind down Wednesday with no sign of the missing 8-year-old girl, despite a week spent trudging through underbrush, diving into a river and ponds, and crisscrossing 700 acres of land.

D.C. police said that on Thursday, they will continue to comb through parts of Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens, but they added that the operation there is being scaled back and could end this week.

“With the information we had, this was our best chance” to find Relisha, Assistant Chief Peter Newsham told reporters. Authorities vowed to keep up the quest for the girl but said tips have slowed. Police, firefighters, cadets and volunteers have looked in manholes and culverts, gone into vacant houses and emptied trash bins.
