Never personally saw an ocean but have seen mountains in West Virginia. I guess that defaults to mountains.

When I learned never to bring a skunked dog inside the house.

LOL@Yahtzee. Because it wasn’t a direct spray I thought it would be quick and easy straight to the bathtub. I was wrong. LOL!! It was around 2 a.m. and the entire backyard was stinking, so couldn’t do anything outside. I also learned that PartyLite candles work very well to remove the ODEAR from the house. 🙂

one time in fort lauderdale beach i had to throw trash in one of those big giant dumpsters and it was pretty dark and this big hairy crazed raccoon jumped right out at me and chased me all the way to the stairs!! LLOLO
i mean i couldn’t believe what was happening! almost had a heart attack!! lolol it was like a creepy cartoon!

Skunks are like large ferrets. I didn’t see it. My dog was running up and down the fence line so it had to be on the other side of the fence when it sprayed. She thought it was play time.
I live next to a forest. We also have silver foxes, coyotes, deer, rabbits and bats. Twice this week, an opossum has been in the backyard. It plays possum when the dog comes out. There are 3 toads in my basement window well now. Want to come visit and help me remove them? LOL!!
Did I mention snakes?
It is probably going to be a hard winter because the critters are collecting food like crazy this year. That’s the problem. I grow grapes, and raspberries and trees that are producing little apples. There are two walnut trees on the other side of the fence and the squirrels think that my deck is their dining room in the mornings.
Did I mention that one day a snake was sunning on the deck?
Raccoons can be mean. Their claws can cause damage so it’s good you ran. They do love picking through garbage.

@Marilyn C. Oh Marilyn. It took me great courage to go to the beach on Lake Michigan. One time was enough for me. I love looking at bodies of water where I can see land on the other side. And, if it’s bigger than a bathtub, I’m not getting in it. 🙂

@Two sides. Funny that you mentioned this blog being a
savesafe place. This blog started as a branch of a Yahoo Group of what started as 3 people. One purpose for the group was to have one place to upload discovery documents. Then Yahoo limited the size of uploads. We decided to start a blog.The other 2 people still like posting in comment sections of online news sources. I don’t. I don’t mind debate but draw a line with personal attacks and racial slurs. Most online news sources do not moderate comments worth a darn. But, we thought that a little debate would be fun as long as participants adhered to the rules. 🙂 The first person who challenged us wasn’t bad in the first comment. His second comment consisted of nothing but denigrating Trayvon. Sorry — Zimmerman was the one charged with second degree murder and awaiting trial.
It was then decided that Trayvon haters would not get one comment through on this blog. They cannot be trusted to be respectable. I began noticing their handles and writing styles so even when comments were submitted that weren’t denigrating and demeaning, I knew the person submitting the comment demonstrates the passive-aggressive role — be nice enough to have their one comment approved and then spam the comment section with filth.
Not here. Not in our house.

Sometimes I can’t condemn the trolls because so many comments on the Z supporters blogs drive me crazy because they’re so illogical and immoderate (is that a word – I’m so tired!), so I wouldn’t behave in their house either! I’ve certainly posted my fair share of comments elsewhere that have been kept in moderation or deleted.
I still comment here and there at news sites, but I sometimes pay for it with various cyber attacks. And most sites have deteriorated quite a bit since the verdict. There were always crazies, but the worst commenters are worse than ever now. I question why any news venue bothers to have comment sections any more. Perhaps for entertainment.
But again, I appreciate the work you do here and how you make us feel welcome.

It was after Zimmerman’s arrest that I posted comments on Yahoo articles. When I heard a potential juror say that he doesn’t read comments on Yahoo because they are “mean-spirited,” I said “YEP!” It was because of the mean-spirited comments and lack of moderation that I decided to stop posting comments on Yahoo. It was no longer debate but fighting. Those type of comments are intended to provoke responses of like-kind. I lack patience dealing with ignorant people, and even less patience with people who seek to provoke hateful emotions. But mostly, I remember what a professional once wrote about verbal abusers only having as much power as you give them.
Then too, I lack patience to scroll through pages and pages of comments to reach the thread where I posted.
I didn’t start participating on blogs until around June. A late comer, I was the new girl on the block so to speak, and when I opened this blog around September of last year, was an instant target for Trayvon haters who had been stalking me on other blogs. (I was popular to them and didn’t know it.) 🙂
The lack of moderation on news sources is because they use the number of “hits” and comments to attract advertisers. What they don’t tell advertisers is after the first day the article is posted, there might be only 10 people or less “hitting” the site to post comments as a continuation of responses. On Yahoo, after the first day an article was posted, I think there may have been 2 or 3 who continued the fight. There was one guy who admitted having 30 accounts with 30 different handles. Whenever he saw a new handle that wasn’t one of his own, he accused the person of being someone else.
It was like watching a 3 yr old throw tantrums that anyone would dare to challenge his monopoly of the comment section.
Oh — discovered that many of the Yahoo articles that I posted comments on are no longer available. That convinces me that even the comments of Trayvon haters were all in vain.

@m1. Thank you, and like others here, your comments add to the success of this blog. They encourage and challenge me.
I must give you credit for inspiring me to compare the decisions in the Dooley and Zimmerman cases. As you know, with the Dooley decision, I was convinced that the Zimmerman jury had to go in the same direction. If “initial aggressor” applied to Dooley for leaving his driveway, then it certainly applied to Zimmerman for leaving his truck. And, if David James saw Dooley as a threat justifying attacking him as he walked away, then surely Trayvon had the same rights IF he laid hands on Zimmerman when Zimmerman stood face-to-face to Trayvon while going in his pockets.
You told me that race decided the Dooley case and would decide Zimmerman’s case. I took the position that it’s the same law and issues, and should be applied and decided in the same manner. Well, you were correct. I was wrong. I see the light.

Excellent example of how race played a part in the juror’s verdict. How ironic that the race factor in profiling was not allowed, IMO it should have been, and yet it is clear race played a part in the verdict
JUROR: I think he was frustrated. I think he was frustrated with the whole situation in the neighborhood, with the break-ins and the robberies. And they actually arrested somebody not that long ago. I — I mean, I would feel comfortable having George, but I think he’s learned a good lesson.
COOPER: So you would feel comfortable having him now, because you think he’s learned a lesson from all of this?
JUROR: Exactly. I think he just didn’t know when to stop. He was frustrated, and things just got out of hand.
“It was just hard thinking that someone had lost their life and nothing else could be done about it,” she said. “It’s a tragedy that this happened.”

@dreamer. Yep — Juror B37, the stealth. One reporter said that O’Mara’s closing gave the jury approval to use their biases. Their decision says that anyone “frustrated” with things in their community has the legal right to be a vigilante taking the law into their own hands.

B37 didn’t need any encouragement for jury nullification since she already had her mind made up before jury selection.

@roderick2012. You hit the proverbial nail on the head about Juror B37. Zimmerman was never in jeopardy of being convicted due to her being on the jury.

@Two sides. I’m surprised that the State did not reject to her being seated. Anyone who refers to peaceful protests as “riots” clearly announces their prejudice. It’s not the gathering but who was gathering that she judged as “riots.”

I need to watch the video again, but IIRC, O’Mara objected on the basis that the State had already objected to several White women in a row. There were plenty potential jurors remaining, including White women, but O’Mara couldn’t afford to lose his stealth juror neither chance getting another minority on the jury — one native to Florida — one who could actually read rather than having the law read to them. One that would actually ask a more specific question about manslaughter and wait on an answer rather than being told to vote again. One who believes that when the defendant is guilty, there is law to convict. One with enough courage to tell Juror B37 what train to get on and take her husband with her.

Yes. Preemptory challenge. Either the prosecution didn’t use it, or Judge Nelson rejected that somehow, I think.

@Two sides. Here’s the video. It includes O’Mara argument about the State striking White women potential jurors. The State did not use a peremptory challenge for Juror B37. Know what that tells us? That the State CANNOT discern dog whistles. Maybe the State should have hired Michael Skolnick or Tim Wise as a jury adviser.

Thank you. Oh yeah – now I remember the scenario. I think perhaps the state figured even if the defense had a hot one, that they’d probably have some strong support against Z too. Or perhaps as we’ve discussed, it was all part of just letting the case go to the dogs.

You would think that if George had learned his lesson, he would have some regrets for killing Trayvon. Things got out of hand because……..George was frustrated, Trayvon wasn’t, he was just going home. We all frustrated, but wouldn’t you feel alittle bit bad someones child ended up dead because of it? Really. Not Georgie, he has no regrets.
Oh well, he’s learned his lesson. The real tragedy is that someone believes its okay that a chiild died because the killer has learned a lesson and won’t do it again. That’s beyond frustration. I wonder had George been black, and B37’s daughter had been molested and raped, because George was fustrated his wife was not preforming her wifely duties, would B37 be okay with the same response, well things got out of hand, George went alittle to far, but I think he’s leaned his lesson, and won’t do it again. George has already stated on national TV he has not regrets.

As long as the victim is an expendable black person, there’s a segment of society that feels an action like Z’s is okay. They’d not cut him as much slack otherwise – he’d get some level of manslaughter for pursuing and likely provoking a confrontation.

@dreamer. You make excellent points. So true — Zimmerman has no regrets. Scary thing. Even pet owners have regrets when they have to put their pets down. There’s always that question in the back of their head asking if they could have done anything differently. But, George said he would not have done anything differently. He would have still gotten out of his truck and followed Trayvon.
If not but for the fact that George Zimmerman got out of his truck to follow, and did follow Trayvon, the two would not have physically met.

Last year, one of the first harassing comments submitted to this blog mocked my using the term “we” when all the articles posted at that time were those I wrote. The mocker fails to understand the support and supporters behind the scenes proofing, promoting, providing subject matter ideas and research resources.
So, I’m coming right out and saying it sister — I could not have gotten out of the starting gate and started running this race without your support and encouragement. You have been the driving force from the beginning, even the encouragement and support in the Yahoo Group that we open a blog. You are my rock — never too busy even when you have personal priorities.

@roderick2012. If I understand it correctly, nomination is by peers. Then Word Press has a committee that visits the nominated blogs and they decide on the winners. Winners is plural because if the blog comes in at 100th place, it can claim honor of coming in as one of the top 100 Most Influential Blogs. Same goes for being among the top 50, top 25, top 10, etc.

Congratulations Xena and BlushedBrown. I’ve always enjoyed the posts of encouragement and tributes to Trayvon Martin the most, seconded by the hero series that BlushedBrown wrote. Coming in third are the posts breaking down Zimmerman’s statements along with the videos. The posts comparing Dooley and Zimmerman’s cases are truly outstanding. What can I say? This entire blog is worthy of the nomination.
