“Tragedy on Trial: The George Zimmerman Story”
Did anyone watch the CNN Special? I did. It brought out things about the history of Sanford that I was unaware of.
Reporter David Mattingly said, “You have to understand the stage before you understand the players.”
That’s so true. The history of that area reveals a deep-seated root of racial segregation and discrimination. Someone like George Zimmerman would be comfortable there as long as those he harassed and yes, murdered, were Black.

I am happy that the report brought out the make-up of the jury and how O’Mara played into their fears of Black males. I’m happy about that because it reveals Mark O’Mara’s real opinion about Trayvon Martin, thereby revealing the insincerity of O’Mara’s offer to discuss race and the judicial system.
I found the program to also be supportive of Rachel Jeantel, her testimony, and her credibility.
About the only thing that I can be certainly critical of, is that the program said Zimmerman had a broken nose. That was never proven and was actually refuted by the physician’s assistant that examined and treated Zimmerman. For argument sake, let’s say it was true. It would then establish precedence that shooting a person in the heart is a legal self-defense response for being hit in the nose.

i admit it was much more palatable then i expected. it was mostly defensive of Trayvon AS the Child he was, which we haven’t seen represented on TV.
and Tracy and Sybrina were portrayed respectfully.
nowhere was the zim family discussed at all that i can recall, which was pretty decent of CNN IMO.
i was distracted at the beginning so i have to watch it again..

@renxkyoko. Welcome to Blackbutterfly7. The program showed the clip of Maddy, Juror B29’s interview where she said Zimmerman got away with murder. At least he knows that even a juror believes he got away with murder.

Xena! Aw Shoot! I meant to watch it but completely forgot it was airing. I knew they were going to delve in to the racist history of Sanford Florida and it’s police department. I will also, find it on-line and watch it now though. I had briefly researched the SPD and its racist practices of not investigating or prosecuting the killing of unarmed Black men when the killers were members of the SPD or those associated with the PD.

@mindyme62. I missed the first airing but it replayed at 11 p.m. CST and I saw it then. They ended it with Zimmerman’s post-verdict behavior, including a portion of Shellie’s interview where she questioned his innocence.

@Dr. Rex. Until this case, I had not thought of Florida as “the South.” Rather, I thought of it as mainly a vacation and retirement state made up of people from across America. I presumed it was a State of diverse cultures that blended, with flying cockroaches, lizards and the Hurricane capital of the nation. Then came George Zimmerman, SYG, and a jury of Seminole County residents who don’t understand murder and self-defense law in the state where they reside. (sigh)

It made me sick. To flash that photoshopped pix and then say he had a broken nose without any proof, both the blood on the back of his head and that joke of a photoshop. Then they showed his walk thru w/o questioning the 40′. They showed a pix but it wasn’t his mug shot where he’s in the orange jacket. It’s the angelic white t shirt one. And him saying all that bs about how his head was bashed to that corrupt detective.
Sanford has a history of racism…show me any southern town that doesn’t. So, ok, that was their angle probably redone after the huge success of the movie “41”. But the real interesting angle would have been along impact of social media and this was America’s version of the Arab spring where that was begun from a simple vegetable stall merchant setting himself on fire in opposition to pay to play forced upon them. That went out over twitter and caused a major change.
Well, I understand tubby leaving Sanford cause that town was the whipping boy for tubby killing a kid. And at least they didn’t mention watermelon ice tea and skittles makes a person high. I tried it…it doesn’t. 😉
Who owns CNN now? Did the Koch brothers buy it ( they just purchased LA times).

@2dogsonly. IMHO, what they showed of GZ with his statement and walk through, was countered at the end with his post-verdict behavior and Shellie saying that she doubted his innocence. The program did not re-litigate the case, which was good. It gave viewers certain points and presented the defense’s subtle use of racism and the make-up of the jury as reasons for finding Zimmerman not guilty.
But mostly, it keeps Trayvon’s legacy fresh to viewers. He was a kid. He was walking home minding his own business. He was followed by GZ. He was killed by GZ. And, IMHO, what they showed of GZ saying he was losing consciousness and screaming for help, just shows that he’s a lying cry baby and not a mature man.

I thought CNN did a fairly good job calling up questions about the trial and verdict, even as it was fair to the defense concerns. I’m glad they pointed out that the saga continues.

@Two sides. Just like Zidiots to belly-ache about a program that’s already aired. Are they asking him why he didn’t present their theories? Do they want him to demean Rachael Jeantel, Benjamin Crump, Natalie Jackson, Rev. Sharpton? Demonize Trayvon? Talk about Sybrina and Tracy using Trayvon’s death for financial gain? Ya know — all the things they talked about before trial that did not support Zimmerman but revealed their White Supremacist ideology? 🙂

Yes, and that Trayvon deserved what he got because they’re bigotvoyants who know exactly what happened during the entire encounter despite all the testimony that clearly pointed out the insignificance of the injuries; that Zman should not have been charged in the first place, of course and ad nauseum. Oh, and they’re horribly mad about Natalie Jackson’s mother being interviewed, and oh, what a race baiter she is; and so is Sunny Hostin, and, well, you’ve heard it all before! 0_0

I don’t know what his supporters are angry about. He was found not guilty, right? Maybe they are angry because his “victory tour” has exposed the George Zimmerman that confronted Trayvon that evening.

i suspect that this and southpark are just the beginning. along with simperman’s own downward spiral, dude will be a complete pariah within a year, losing support of even the fence sitters during the trial and it’s lead up.
i hate the fact that justice was denied, but there can be powerful social commentary and ostracism regarding his actions and those of the racist enclave known as central florida.

@Yahtzee. I agree. It’s because Zimmerman was not held accountable for his actions. Had he been held accountable, he could, like Shellie, admit to his wrong and say that he paid his debt to society. He will spend the rest of his life despised by some, pitied by others, but never respected.
You’re right — his family is living on egg shells not knowing what he will do next. But at least they, unlike Shellie, know what he’s capable of doing. His parents did not ship him out of Virginia to Florida just after high school because he didn’t cause them problems.
