Trayvon’s Law

The NAACP has released a Bill Summary for Trayvon’s Law.

The introduction reads:
“In light of the tragic death of Trayvon Martin and the overwhelming national awareness around numerous issues surrounding this case, the NAACP advocates for creating a set of
laws called “Trayvon’s Law” which embodies legislative responses that will greatly reduce the likelihood of another tragedy like the Trayvon Martin incident. Trayvon’s Law is a set of bills that focus on ending racial profiling, repealing stand your ground type laws, creating law enforcement accountability through effective police oversight, improving training and best practices for community watch groups, and mandating law enforcement data collection on homicide cases involving people of color. Some of these policies can be pushed on the state level; others may lend themselves well to more local campaigns. The NAACP will continue to advocate for these policy changes on the federal level as well. Advocates across the country can push for any combination of these policies that makes the most sense for their city, state, or local jurisdiction.”
The Bill Summary includes repeal of Stand Your Ground Law.  The NAACP writes:

“Repeal Stand Your Ground Type Laws & Restore Sane, Sensible use of Force Standards in Self Defense.

“Although many have tried to promote stand your ground type laws as self-defense measures, the reality is that these laws do nothing but provide cover for vigilantes and hate groups who often choose to take the law into their own hands. Laws like that of Florida have contributed to a 300% increase in so-called self-defense related homicides, and people of color seem to always get caught in the crossfire. The Tampa Bay Times found that defendants claiming “stand your ground” are more successful if the victim is black. A study by the Urban Institute also found that in states that have stand your ground policies, nearly 36% of cases where a white person killed an African American were deemed justifiable homicides, compared to only 3% of cases where an African American killed a white person. Hence, the NAACP proposes that “stand your ground” and other laws that provide immunity for vigilantes be repealed and replaced by common sense, self-defense measures.”

  2. this is so needed. I’ve never understood the need for SYG anyway. Legitimate self defense shouldn’t be that hard to prove.
    Great Article Xena! Thank you!!

    • @mindyme62. I agree. The states have always had justifiable homicide. SYG is nothing more than a law for vigilantes and murderers like George Zimmerman. It’s like potential juror R39 said — when the only witness is dead, there is no one to testify that it was self-defense other than the accused. The Castle Doctrine gives right to protect home and auto, but SYG allows for street fights to turn deadly.

  4. I believe in my heart that this BEAUTIFUL,AMAZING FAMILY will push & work until they get something done with these laws.Since I live in Texas & have the SYG law, which in my opinion only gives a license to kill, people to take the law into their own hands, etc. There is NOTHING good about it.
What is so ironic to me is this Family is fighting for a law which will probably be what saves damn Zimmermans life, because there are plenty of people out here who want to take the law into their own hands against him!!
God Bless this Family & their hard work. They are not holes up somewhere on a BEGGING SITE putting out to the world how broke or broken they are.THEY are the ones who should be BROKEN & curled up into a ball at home! NO….they are out trying to SAVE OUR KIDS LIVES!! My support & prayers go to THIS FAMILY!!
Thanks Xena for posting this Great picture & the Trayvon Law news.T D Jakes & Oprah are suppose to be in Dallas,I wonder if the Family will come too??

    • @Marilyn C. Always great to see your fonts! It’s been maybe 2 weeks since I checked over at TheJBMission. I miss you guys and hope that JB is back. There is still work to do.

If I’m not mistaken, T.D. Jakes’ church is in Dallas.

Illinois Congress just passed conceal carry, and the Governor did not want to sign the Bill into law. The matter is before the Federal Court for the 7th Circuit. The Brady Campaign against gun violence filed an Amicus brief on behalf of Sybrina and Tracy, and the parents of Jordan Davis.

It might take some time, but I can see a future where SYG laws are repealed. Well, maybe not in Florida until tourism and entertainer boycotts effect their economy, or the Supreme Court of the U.S. decides that SYG is unconstitutional.

  5. You are so right about there is still work to be done! I do hope the tourists boycott Florida as well as the entertainers who are signing up to do.The list that I have seen so far is getting pretty long.
Yes….T D Jakes Church is in Dallas, but on Aug 29th Oprah is having her Lifeclass for her TV show & here lately she has been very vocal about Trayvon.
It seems Sybrina & Tracy are getting the help of alot of people.I couldn’t be happier for these people!

    • @Yahtzee. The NAACP did a good job with the Bill Summary, didn’t they? IMHO, there was nothing wrong with self-defense and justifiable homicide laws. SYG is the right to kill the only witness to murder.

  8. Hi Xena,
I’m so happy to be able to get back on. I don’t know what happened. I could read your’s and JB’s, but couldn’t post.
    Anyway I can now. : )

That is a great cover on Ebony. I hope that the Martin’s keep on fighting and just know that there are some out here fighting with them for Justice. Trayvon’s name will not go away and He ad Jordon will forever be in our hearts and pray it stops. This stand your ground sounds like a sad and tragic joke, BUT it’s real and they are right We Are All Trayvon.

What a beautiful family and Jahvaris is such a wonderful son like Trayvon. I can’t imagine the pain that they have to wake up to every morning. It is a pain like no other and NOTHING can fill that hole in your heart.
T hope too Xena that the state legislatures take Trayvon’s Law setiously and pass it.
It IS the ONLY thing to do.
    Thanks for the article!!
